I'm not really involved in anything that requires leadership skills, but I want to be. There isn't really anything at my school I can do because my school is lame. So can anyone give me some good ideas on how to acquire leadership skills please. This is so I can have a better chance of getting into the AFA.

It's too late for both of those things... But I used to be in boy scouts in like 3rd grade. Does that count?

There are zero activities that you can join to try and get into a leadership position at your school?  I find that hard to believe.

I don't play sports in school. I'm in band. I play percussion. I'm in 10th grade so I still have two more years to go. Does community service count at all?

Section Leader? Community service might, depending on what you do....

Editor of the yearbook, find a club you like and get into a leadership role, etc...

Does your school have NHS?  If it does, join it and try to get an administrative role.  That gives community service and leadership.

There are too many people better than me to get section leader. I go to a 5A school... So there's a lot of people and it's hard to do something and get a leadership position in it.

What kind of community service stuff is there to do that'll get leadership stuff?

I have no idea of specifics, but I think if you helped organize something, it'd be good.

if you're only a sophomore then you got time to join the jr ROTC -- you might not whatever high rank for jr ROTC but nonetheless you get to experience some military and you'll acquire rank that will give you some leadership

you've got crawl before you can walk ....... so you need to see and react to leadership before giving leadership

I don't think I have room on my schedule...

I have 8 periods.

1st  - Band
2nd - Algebra 2
3rd - German 2
4th - English

5th - Band
6th - History
7th - Biology
8th - Computer Science

and next year I'm going to have band for 2 periods... and I'll only have one slot left open and I'm going to be using that for a required computer class.

It is never too late to get in to boyscouts, or to get Eagle Scout. You can get Eagle Scout in just under two years.

I don't believe you can straight up learn leadership. You can practice it and fine tune how you interact with others, but it's mostly just that, how you interact with others. If you can motivate people well and have the perseverance to get something done, you can probably lead people just fine.

I would definitely agree with what SEREMAKER said though, if you truly feel you are having problems leading people you need to be able to be led before you can lead.

Dude start a band.  Then be the main driver for everything to do with the band.  Be the leader, be the agent, be the manager.  If you can learn to control lazy "I'm better than you" musicians to a successful manner, then you can lead anyone.

I know it sounds far fetched, but dive a little deeper into how insane some musicians are about the most trivial things.  It's like an OCD club.

Music looks really good to colleges if you carry it through.

I think his point is that you need to make a decision.  If you are serious about getting into the AFA, then you need to do everything you can to reach that end.  If joining JROTC means that you have to take less band, but it will make you more desirable for the AFA, then you should seriously consider doing it.

make sure your senator will actually write you a rec too

My friend had the misfortune of having to ask the one and only Hilldog for a rec (which her office promptly turned down, saying the campaign was in full swing. Last year.)
