"...For many Iraqis, though, the sand-and-ochre-colored compound peering out across the city from a reedy stretch of riverfront within the fortified Green Zone is an unsettling symbol both of what they have become in the five years since the fall of Saddam Hussein, and of what they have yet to achieve.

"It is a symbol of occupation for the Iraqi people, that is all," says Anouar, a Baghdad graduate student who thought it was risk enough to give her first name. "We see the size of this embassy and we think we will be part of the American plan for our country and our region for many, many years..."

"...$1 billion a year to operate
The $740 million compound – expected to cost more than $1 billion a year to operate – was originally expected to cost $600 million to build and was to open in September 2007. Design changes and faulty construction caused repeated delays..."

Pentagon needs to force workers to live there! lol

"...But even the embassy's opening may not be assuaging diplomats' concerns about assignments in Iraq. Last week, the State Department warned that it may start ordering employees to serve at the embassy next year if more volunteers do not come forward for the 300 posts expected to open.

The State Department announcement follows a similar warning last fall of a shortfall of volunteers for about 50 Iraq positions. Candidates were eventually found without any compulsory assignments for 2008, but the prospect of ordered assignments to a war zone caused tensions at the department..."

So what do you think of this?  I've known they had been building it (two I thought) and that it would be a small base of sorts (i believe actual bases are also being built around the country).  Is this the rudest thing ever?  Was it paid for with oil revenue or taxes?  Will it be destroyed and left inhabited because of neverending mortar fire (with any luck!)?  I'm sure we asked permission from the sovereign country of Iraq if we could build it... lol

To address the OP:
There's a need for a diplomatic presence.

Edit:
It's too big.

un-INHABITED DESTRUCTION is what it should have said.  Cool now?

I'm just wondering what kind of troop deployment had to be ordered to allow this thing to be built.  I'm wondering if it would have been better to build it AFTER the country is stabilized (where it's own "safe" green zone can actually be safe), with permission of the sovereign government.  As it is, it pisses off the Iraqis (who regard us as occupiers, not liberators), it's like pouring alcohol on a paper cut and a slap in the face of their sovereignty...not to mention the cost, size, and embarrassing inability to fill it.  The Pentagon is attempting to fool our ambassadors as it has a small percentage of American TV viewers that it's safe there, but those workers ain't buying it for obvious reasons.  Can you say "raining mortars?"

Agreed.  But they needed an Embassy.  It probably would have been better not to make it bigger than the Iraqi palace though.

Way to complete misquote someone. gj man. Where does he say he wants Americans to die? Mortar fire != deaths. Infact in most cases mortars cause no deaths.

One day we will see this building on fire and in the same time, the last of the american troops in Iraq will be retreating.

Yep, bought a pair of mortars for my kids for Xmas.  It's so cute when then play "Embassy" with the neighbors.

Ridiculous. Strangely reminiscent of the kind of palaces Saddam owned....

That looks like a darn sight more than just a fucking embassy. An expression of imperial ambitions I would say.

Well, our fearless leaders need a place they can "sneak in under the cover of darkness" to boldly declare how safe it is in Iraq...  I'm sure it has it's own 747 friendly airstrip too.

1. The Pentagon (Defense Department) has nothing to do with embassies (State Department) other than providing the Marine guard contingent.

2. Yes, the US Embassy in Iraq has a 747-friendly airstrip...it's called Baghdad International Airport.

3. Would be interesting to see how many Iraqis were gainfully employed building that "obscenely large" compound for the last few years.

Surely you can't be qualifying the size based on the employment it provided...

This is the US embassy in Ireland - Ireland being a nation with far deeper and more historic ties with the US than any middle eastern nation. A country that 40 million Americans claim descendancy from. You can walk around it in about 2 minutes.

1. Read the article smart guy.

2. Was a joke indicating the property is probably big enough to have it's own airstrip...and baghdad airport is not secure..at least the road from it to the "safe zone"

3.  Yeah, the Iraqis built it..with all the security features kept a good secret!  Try Halliburton and all the other inept construction crews our soldiers and marines were yanked from real fighting to babysit for..how many years to build it?

I figured you'd defend this building and the audacity with which it was built...
I did...smart...guy. Perhaps you could point to the part that says anything about the Pentagon having anything to do with the embassy's construction or opening schedule...or anything else.

I couldn't care less about the building. I completely agree that it's over the top.

Facts about it:
the size of Vatican City,
with the population of a small town, its own defense force,
self-contained power and water,
and a precarious perch at the heart of Iraq.
The embassy complex — 21 buildings on 104 acres,
The embassy's 104 acres is six times larger than the United Nations compound in New York, and two-thirds the acreage of Washington's National Mall.
It will have its own water wells, electricity plant and wastewaster-treatment facility, "systems to allow 100 percent independence from city utilities,"

That or perhaps the fact that you want to pretend otherwise. A long history of CIA underhandedness across the world, the weak and fallacious case for war in Iraq, the vast oil reserves the nations sits atop, the lack of immediate necessity (or even necessity full stop) for the war, the abolition of the entire Iraqi government apparatus and army (instantly generating 100s of 1000s of unemployed men) leading to chaos and the flight of the middle class and now permanent bases and an 'embassy' that look more like the Ministry of Truth out of George Orwell's 1984. It ain't rocket science.
