There are two flaws in the HDT design currently used in CPU cooler products:
1. The surface is rough and occasionally uneven.
2. There are channels created between the mounting base and heat-pipe.

Fixing the first problem required some wet-sand paper and elbow grease (that's a metaphor for hard work, so don't go searching the web for another product). By lapping down the surface to a flat even base, you can then polish it down to minimize the grain-like finish inherent of HDT products.

Solving the second problem can be done with potentially less time. Assuming you're not so hard-core that brazing the heat-pipe and mounting base surface gaps together with tin solder is an option, then I would recommend filling the inner channels with thermal paste

Great article, maybe sticky it?

I'd have thought everyone knew to spread out thermal paste, maybe I'm wrong. I'd love to know where he got that Ultra-120 from too, as the 9 I've installed have all been mirror finished straight from the box, that one looks like he attacked with with a baboon wrapped in sandpaper.

A friend has an Ultra and he was really disappointed when he got it. It was very roughly finished.

Ultra 120 or 120 extreme?, I've only ever used the Extremes and they've all be mirror shined, maybe they save some cash not finishing the lower end modles quite as well.

I agree on that one. Its really easy to apply it with it.

I <3 that paste. Although, the thermal compound I got with my GeminII is slightly more effective.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I had problems with pastes in tubes. It didn't wanted to go out then i squeezed harder and half of the paste was on my desk.

I bought some AS5 many months ago and it still does the job fine (a 3.5g version). I always applied a nice, thin layer with an old card lying around and it does the job nicely

I use this (only mine is the bigger version). The syringe makes it very easy to apply. Just squeeze a little out and put the cover back on.

I applied pastes with a piece of paper. Stone age style.

Lapping, pft. I've heard numerous people doing this, though I have yet to see the need for the effort as most high end coolers provide quite sufficient cooling.

If I was that crazy about temps I'd just make the transition to water cooling.

And all this serious discussion over thermal paste, lol. I purchased some cheap crap at my local best buy: it works perfectly (33º idle w/ zalman 9500), and after half a dozen applications the tube is still practically full.

I usually use a piece of plastic like a credit card.  Is that legit?

that's what I do. Works a charm
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

The point of lapping isn't so much to lower temps, it's to get more even temps. Using multiple cores, the cores aren't always the same temperature, because of impurities in the surfaces of the IHS and HSF. So if you lap them you get rid of or reduce those impurities, resulting in more even and mildly lower temperatures.

Syringe with AS5, place 2 blobs on where the Cores are located and put the cooler on.
