So I've just bought some new DVDs and I want to store them on my external HDD. What's the best program to use? Has to be free, thanks.
DVD Decrypter is what I used to use
I use DVD shrink. very easy to use, fast, does the work well and its completely free. You can Dload it here:

DVDShrink is software to backup DVD discs. You can use this software in conjunction with DVD burning software of your choice, to make a backup copy of any DVD video disc.
DVDShrink will also burn your backup DVD, if you have installed the latest version of Nero. You can also download a demo version of Nero here. If you already possess alternative burning software and prefer to stick with it, then you can still use DVD Shrink. The output from DVDShrink can be saved as files on your hard drive, which you can then burn with software of your choice.
DVDShrink is free software. You should never pay for DVDShrink.
Any program is "free" if you have connections...
but yeah I use DVD Decrypter too. Also you can use DVD Shrink if you want to shrink them down to fit on a DVD if you want to burn them.

Doesn't that save it as a .bin or .cue file? I know VLC plays it but I just can't remember what file type it is.Mitch92uK wrote:

I use DVDShrink most of the time too. But for encrypted DVDs, I use DVDFab HD Decrypter..Sup wrote:

no it saves it in the same format as a dvd. I have always used dvd decrypter to back up movies and dvd shrink to burn them to a singl layer dvd as it lets you remove menus and special features and just have to movie.ebug9 wrote:

DVD's don't have a singular type unless you're referring to an ISO of the disc, which is also inaccurate. Then again, that's what a .bin or .cue can be or is in this context.jaymz9350 wrote:

I usually make an ISO of the disc and run it in VLC. I just do this through Ubuntu, haven't bothered finding an application for it in Windows.
it's not an iso file. I don't remember what they are exactly but I know you need a dvd decoder to play the files off the hard drive.Defiance wrote:

You just need a software DVD player like Power DVD or InterVideo DVD.jaymz9350 wrote:

DVD decoders are also programs that convert DVD to AVi for example. So to be exact he needs a DVD player with built-in decoder (which all software DVD players have).jaymz9350 wrote:

Ive burned COUNTLESS DVD's with that (ripped them also)
I just store the Data on my other D Drive, so if someone wants a movie I just burn it for them
to Burn with DVD shrink, you need Nero or something, I just used to Software that came with my 25$ DVD Drive
So, he needs something that only exists in one thing which would not work without the thing he needed. Makes perfect sense. Or it's just redundant..Sup wrote:

DVD Decoder. One component of different types of programs. One type of program can code the decoded DVD video in to an avi. This is not a "DVD Decoder," this is a program that can code the decoded DVD video in to an AVI. A DVD Player is a much simpler program that merely decodes the DVD with a DVD Decoder then outputs the video.
Finally, Jaymz (very subtle), a .BIN is a true binary image of whatever disc. It's a disc image, just like a .ISO is, but the .cue stores track data. Better for disc imaging, but only locally as distribution is made that much harder with a second file. I like ISO because it's one file, works for most everything and a more recognized term for a disc image. If you wish to use .bin for your images then that's fine though you'll have to keep the two files together.
While we're on the subject, what is the best program to use to make normal 4.7gb DVD files, into a 700MB avi file without loosing too much quality?
Popular contest says DVDrip.Dauntless wrote:

DVD Decrypter still works for most discs but some pressers have found ways to "confuse" decrypter so you need to use DVDFab or Shrink, etc. Also be aware that after the MPAA injunction against DVD Decrypter the MPAA released a version of their own that reports the IPs of those who try to update the software. Gotta love the shady dealings of the movie industry. If you run DVD Decrypter be sure to disable "check for updates".
GB Ethernet + 1 TB SAN + DVD Iso's + Daemon Tools = DVD Jukebox anywhere in the house.
