No ur right, he needs a better mobo and that WS PRO is a really good choice.

But guys do not forget. Q extremes communicate faster with the memory so even though he might not OC it is still a very fast setup.

3. My wank OEM M-ATX Mobo has 3 PCI slots so I think it's safe to assume most ATX mobo's will have more ..

most motherboards i've seen recently only have 2 pci slots. my nf4 and p35 board both only have 2. If you have 3 pci slots on a matx board then it is old tech unless you mean you have 3 pcie and pci combined.

Also QX9650 is HUGE waste of money.

my Asus P5E X38 for example has two pci slots that you can use with dual slot 8800.

edit: qx9650 is for dry ice/LN2 overclocking and it sounds like you aren't going to do that... q9450 can OC just as well with normal cooling.

I wouldn't say it is a huge waste of money. I think that if he doesn't plan on overclocking the processor, then it would be an ok buy, if he has the dough for it. Not everyone buys a processor just to OC it. But like I said, if he has the money, he can pretty much buy whatever he wants, even if it might be a little overkill...I would buy it...if I had the money.

Richard: 1st up - ignore most of the above posts.

OK, I'll try to sumarise the important parts, and not give you fanboy do-this/don't-do-this-ism's...

1. Really, don't buy off ebay - you can get good quality components on ebay, but equally, you can get ripped off - buy from a reputable source.

2. What's your budget?
3. Do you plan to Overclock?
4. Do you forsee buying a second video card and running SLi?
5. What's your intended use for the machine?

6. The QX9650 is a very nice processor, I'd buy one, but you can get a better performance-cost ratio with other processors.
7. The mobo you've chosen only supports DDR2 - DDR3 would be a better match for that CPU - but it will bump the price up.
8. If you will be SLi'ing at some point, you'll need an nVidia SLi mobo (or an ATI GPU) - the mobo you've selected is ATI Crossfire (and the GPU is nVidia) - for nVidia SLi and DDR3, look for one with the 790i chipset - for ATI Crossfire and DDR3, look for the X48/X38 chipset (but make sure it is DDR3 - some are DDR2 only, some DDR3, some support both) - again, this will bump the price up.

9. What's your budget?
