I started fishing last year and my only desire to fish is for recreation and to piss in the lake (kidding)....I can care less if I catch a fish. This year I bought a new fishing rod but it has an open reel (fishing line spool is exposed) and not sure how to properly set the fishing line. I have searched on youtube and wiki to find how to set my line but could not find a decent demonstration. Can anyone find/post a how to video or pics?

Um, you mean that the metal ring around the top is open, so the stuff just falls out?
Flick it down, and it will lock to prevent that. Kinda confused, post pics of what the problem is.

(pressuming the line is tied around the spool already, a lot of reels come this way).

Take the line and pass it under the spool (large ring), then flip the ring over so you can pull the line out, take it and thread it through each ring of the rod.

If the reel dosent have any line on and you need to do it yourself this is fairly easy too.

Fix the reel to the rod, take the line from the shop and tie it around the reel, get someone else to hold the spool of line from the shop so that it is tight as you reel the line onto your new reel, its important it goes on tight.

Can you remember an old "Hamlet Cigar" advert to do with fishing?

The Angler, chuck in a record player playing a Des o'Conner album on it and the fish jumped out. funny back then (when I was 10).

On Last man Standing the other week this one tribe were chucking dynamite in the water and dazing the fish then diving in and picking them out by hand.

Your and their explosives take the fun out if it and would stopped me being stoned on the bank all day.

I couldnt give a rats ass if I catch or not (I'm only going to chuck them straight back in) but as long as I don't run out of Rizla's I'm ok.

holy shitballs that's a LOT of line on there

ok cut that mess away at the reel so you only have one piece of line coming off of the spool

omfg another fisherman... you have found me loubot, the answer to all your fishing needs.  in those first pics you posted, you have too much line on your spool.  you only need to fill it about a 1/8 inch from the edge, otherwise it will start spooling off and make a big mess like you got there.  also, to make life easy, take off the spool, tie the line to the spool, and before you put the spool back on the reel, flip the bail over.  attach the spool, set the bail, and start reeling line onto the spool.

i am all things fishing so feel free to ask me anything.  steelie comes from steelhead, since im a steelhead nut.  and since im from NE ohio, i can help you out with good fishing around here.  i presume you'll be looking for bass and bluegill from the scioto?

edit: those are some nice links krazed

thks Kraze & Steelie for the tips & links.

Steel, All of the fishing I have done were at water reservoirs and only catching small fishes like blue gill. Once I know what I am doing with this new rod and reel, I will eventually, like to hit Lake Erie and some other spots in the Lake / Cuyhoga counties.

its an addiction for sure... pretty soon you'll get this disease known as "spendallmymoneyonuselessfishingtackle" and it kicks ass.  i seriously have 16+ rods all for different species and conditions.  i put walmart's fishing section to shame with the amount of tackle i own, but of course i need it all   lake erie kicks ass, early spring (right now!) is a great time to catch walleyes on a headboat.  for 40 bucks they take you out on the lake for 7 hours and put you right on top of fish.  later in the season there are perch charters as well as the walleye boats.  perfect if you dont have a boat and dont want to spend hundreds on a private charter.  there are bass and bluegill in pretty much every pond and reservoir in the state, which are always a good time.  the real fun, though, is in the winter.  while everyone else is cuddled up in front of their pc playing their games, you can have the joy of standing in 32 degree water with snow blowing in your face all day, catching 30 inch steelhead that take literally ten minutes to land.  great fun!

Ask my dad, he's obsessed with fishing.
Imo, it's extremely boring.

nice. yeah i have a buddy with a house in islamorada (florida keys). best fishing in the world baby. still haven't caught a wahoo down there it will happen this summer.

on a side note, my buddy caught a nice tarpon in the canal (right behind where my pic was taken), held it up for the picture, and the tarpon shat all over him still probably the funniest thing i've ever seen. i was half drunk and laughed for a good 30 mins. best part is we got it on video! you can actually hear the shitting
