My audigy 2 ZS died so I've been using onboard for the last year or so. Recently upgraded to an xfi xtreme gamer but have noticed that my fps has gone down in all my new games (crysis, cod4, assassins creed etc.) by about 10-20. I have CMSS, crystallizer, and EAX all on. Newest drivers from creative site on windows XP.

Is this normal?

Surely a better sound card should increase fps if anything as it takes load off the cpu? :S

Also when uninstalling the onboard drivers I got rid of the realtek audio package, but have left the microsoft kb888111 intel high def audio installed. Haven't tried getting rid of it yet as it's over 1gb and if it turns out I need it I don't want to have to redownload it

Try disabling your on-board sounds from bios

It could well be a driver issue - lingering uninstalled drivers (realtek, audigy 2, etc.), those intel drivers could be getting in the way, or it could even be your X-fi's drivers.

installing a sound card should increase fps because of taking some of the physical load off other components.

Can't seem to pinpoint the problem, maybe I should look for some fan-made drivers. Currently making do with a config for cod4 to keep my fps up

Well, as long as you're pulling in over 60 fps then an extra 10-20 is not going to make any kind of a difference at all.

60 at BF2, -10 at Crysis,...
