Here's some perspective:
$3.69/gallon here right now. Costs about $55-60 for me to fill up my car and I drive 80 miles round trip to my new employer. With my car's 18 gallon tank I'm getting a combined city/hwy mileage of 22-23, so a tank of gas lasts about a week. Does it suck? Sure. Who wouldn't want to pay $1.00/gallon like back in 1999. Is spending $300/mo on a car payment the solution? I think not. I'd just be filling up my tank a day later and saving less than $10.

I don't drive all that much, so filling up costs me about maybe $2,100 per year (@$3.75/gal). A few weeks ago I asked what the difference was to go with a hybrid versus a standard, and was given about a $15,000 difference to essentially double my mileage per gallon. But if the car was nuclear and didn't require gas at all, I'd still need to own that car for about 7 years ($15k / $2.1k) to break even.
It seems something has be done to prevent the auto makers from their mark ups.
Yep...it's crazy. There has been a bit of jump from about £0.97 to £1.07 over the past few months but it's expected to rise up £1.50 p/ litre by the summer over here. Although I think this is more of a 'scare' - but it still isn't helped by the fact that there's been an oil worker's strike..Ender2309 wrote:

Sure oil prices are a big part of it, but there are a couple of other factors that are independent of the price of oil:
No new refineries in 35 years. Gobs of investment by oil companies in exploration, but no capital investments in refineries.
Multiple blends across the country (sometimes multiple blends within states) prohibit economies of scale in refinement, leading to higher gasoline/diesel prices.

It costs me about £70 ($140) a week to fill up & run a 1.9 Diesal engined golf. & im only doing about 520 miles a week. Prices here in the uk are gonna go up about 10 pence in the next couple of mnths up to around £1.30 litre. And i believe about 88% of that price is tax

You neglect to consider how more wide open our infrastructure is. 30 percent of all fuel consumed in the US is just getting food distributed from one side of the country to the other. Our population is still spread out (relatively).. meaning we generally drive further to work, school, stores..etc. Damn Americans and their carbon footprint, right?
