That's right. I've got four kids which means that I get a $4000 tax credit to offset other income, and most of my income gets sheltered thanks to US tax loopholes ... and I just got an $1,800 economic stimulus payment.

This means that I paid negative federal taxes this year. I received money from the US government.

What is amazing is that I live in the region of the US with the highest average income (Fairfax County, VA), I own a $750,000 home, I drive relatively new cars, and I'm putting four children through private school ... yet, now I'm on welfare.

The United States is screwed.

but in reno, it will get you a mansion.

It really depends where you are. Where I live in Dallas/Ft Worth, Texas, $750K will get you a damn nice house.

I'm buying a house in Texas, $130k for 2086 square feet. Not bad, considering I pull in just about $40k/year. We have a son and a second baby coming in December/January, so I'll be looking to get onto WIC, so I don't have to fork out another $2-4k on baby food next year. There's been many times this year when we had to decide, baby food or bread. Baby wins!

Can't wait until my first full year in the house, with two kids on one income. I received back $2600 last year with one kid, so there's no tell what I'll get back then. I'm hoping for $5-6k.

The average home in the US is something like $250k to $300k ... where I live, it is something like $500k.

My home is a 3500 sqft Victorian on 3/4 acres in a highly desirable area of Fairfax County - one of the wealthiest (if not close to the wealthiest) regions of the world. I may be underestimating the value of my home. Larger homes just around the corner have sold for as much as 1.6 million.

The home is not the issue ... the issue is that the US government has someone like me effectively on welfare.

the current housing market has killed the value, three years ago it would have been one million.

you think maybe he could have bought it when it was value much lower. the house I live in was worth $80,000 when it was first bought. Today, its worth $600,000, without even being fully appraised.
