if the ipod is jailbroken there is an app that makes it that you can sync with 2 comps, splits the flash drives into 2 partitions,

Another thing I used to do was use my iPod as a storage thing, and copy my "my music" folder onto it...

If you still have the music on your comp, it won't loose its naming, just copy your my music folder and after format replace the new one with your old one and all your songs will be there in itunes.

What's funny is that I wrote all this on my iPod

There was a program I used to transfer music from my computer to my wife's laptop via my ipod touch but I can't find it.  It worked really well because there is no disk mode with the ipod touch so you can't see it in my computer, which would be the easiest way to move music.  I'll try and search for that program.

All your music should already be on your computer.  Just copy it to a flash drive or external HD and then paste it into your new install.  You won't have to rename anything.

That's what I did when I upgraded from XP to Vista.  I had no trouble, easy as copy and paste.  I use Zune software, but I doubt that changes anything.

This. Running XP and Linux, I have 3 partitions and an external drive. I have 2 copies of my whole music collection, and I dread the day either one of them dies. Why that was said, who knows, point is when you reformat set up an extra partition or get an external drive for backup as you will thank yourself for having a place to back up data whenever you want/need to reformat.

You can't just cut and paste? That sucks.
