Question on Viruses

Ok, I have:
1 HDD for Windows OS
1 HDD (500GB) for storage.

If I download an infected file to my storage hard drive, will my main Windows drive be affected?

Depends on the virus, some copy themselves into registry fiels ,etc. so yeah, dont do it...

I'd type my pc specs out all fancy again but teh mods would remove it. Again.

Storing an infected wont infect the drive. Some process has to be executed to propagate it.

Depends on the file that is causing the BSoD or the lack thereof. If you know for sure a certain file is causing it, get rid of it unless it is a necessary .dll file that makes your system run. I would suggest plopping in your Windows CD and find the file in the i386 folder and copying it to the file affected, if that is the issue.

A virus usually needs something to happen for it to work, i.e. a certain event happening. Worms are the main culprits of destroying Windows files and hard drive volumes and sectors.

say the virus is in a .rar file and i extract it onto my storage drive. what happens then?

You got a virus scanner so you can find out what type of virus it is?

It depends on what type of virus it is. Some viruses will delete certain files on your system while others will place a keylogger on your machine and email whatever it saves to the person who made or passed on the virus. It could be a trojan horse..Just depends on what type of virus it is. Most viruses are a minor incovenience while others are destructive.

Although the majority of viruses are simply a nuisance, some are very destructive. You are asking what will happen indicating you have next to no knowledge of how viruses work. Therefore my advice is... don't play with it.

No, there are a handful of truly evil coders who make the really bad ones, usually for organized crime. But there are many, many, many wannabes out there who write the 97% of nuisance viruses we see in the wild.

Call them the variant kings. Take someone else's code and change a few things to make a slightly different version of the original. This is where you get the .A, .B, .C, etc designation on names (ie Sasser.E).

If you want to mess around with viruses, run them inside a virtual machine. If something goes terribly wrong you can just restore it from a backup
