In the United States, many refrigerants are considered to be controlled substances and one needs to be licensed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in order to purchase and handle these substances. Special handling is required to protect the little ozones that can get damaged by CFCs, HCFCs, etc. ... and, more recently, to protect the world from global warming.
Well, I just got my license. Why? I'm tired of getting anally raped to the tune of $500-1000 just to have a technician come to my home and connect up a gauge and a tank of R22 to my HVAC system. I'm tired of the elitist attitude that has developed by technicians ever since these regulations have come into effect. I guess everyone needs respect and a sense of importance, but the HVAC industry in America is getting WAY out of bounds. They are charging brain-surgery rates, although they are equipped with a 1-year technician education.
Enough. Enough with the costs. Enough with the attitude. So I put in my few hours of study and passed the EPA test with a 96/100. It was easy.
I am now a defender of baby ozones ... I am now going to save the world from Global Warming ... My name is OrangeHound, and I am EPA certified.
