In the United States, many refrigerants are considered to be controlled substances and one needs to be licensed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in order to purchase and handle these substances.  Special handling is required to protect the little ozones that can get damaged by CFCs, HCFCs, etc. ... and, more recently, to protect the world from global warming.

Well, I just got my license.  Why?  I'm tired of getting anally raped to the tune of $500-1000 just to have a technician come to my home and connect up a gauge and a tank of R22 to my HVAC system.  I'm tired of the elitist attitude that has developed by technicians ever since these regulations have come into effect.  I guess everyone needs respect and a sense of importance, but the HVAC industry in America is getting WAY out of bounds.  They are charging brain-surgery rates, although they are equipped with a 1-year technician education.

Enough.  Enough with the costs.  Enough with the attitude.  So I put in my few hours of study and passed the EPA test with a 96/100.  It was easy.

I am now a defender of baby ozones ... I am now going to save the world from Global Warming ... My name is OrangeHound, and I am EPA certified.

96/100 just isn't good enough, I'm afraid. I'd call the technician

I think you should retake the test, I would not let you near my HVAC system.

edit: Thought I should say GZ aswell.

Clearly I'm not happy with the course the American HVAC industry has taken ... I seriously feel violated.

R-22 is a refrigerant used in Air Conditioning systems (DuPont's brand name for R-22 and related refrigerants is "Freon")  .... those devices that put cold air and/or hot air into one's home.  HVAC = Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning

I'm FEMA certified beotches!  What do you think of that?  Now I can sit around and watch the poor people flounder while working incident command centers while aiding the rich and scabby!

So seriously, is R22 the cool new refrigerant that's "safer" than freon?  I had my homeowners or something like it pay for the refrigerant flunky to come out and refill my tanks and solder the pipe on good so it doesn't leak!  Woot!  $30 for that trip!  And good thing too because it got to be 115º that week and wold have been around 98º inside like it was the week prior...

If you go this page of the EPA, it lists places where you can get certified:
http://www.epa.gov/Ozone/title6/608/tec … certs.html

I did mine through Mainstream Engineering Corporation.   Specifically, I just took their on-line course and test to be certified as Type 1 which gives me the ability to purchase refrigerants and do maintenance work on small appliances (cost was $25).

In another week, I'm going to do the Class II so that I can legally connect and service most other units ... but that test needs to be proctored (a little more hassle and cost).

why are you constantly having to charge your system?  Maybe you should fix your system and not just charge it again and again.

There are some leaks that are very slow and basically impossible to find ... like 1/4-3/4 pound a year.   That's the case on one of my systems that is about 15 years old (I have two units).

My other system is about 7 years old, but it has a poorly seating Shrader valve which will leak as much as a pound a year if the cap is not tightened properly ... which .... grrrr ... the technician from last year didn't do.
