I few weeks ago I found a metal lathe on Craig's list and bought it. It was made in 1945! They don't make them like they used to, it weights like 300 pounds! I've been messin around with it and last week I decided to make a set of aluminum motorcycle grips. It took me 2 1/2 days but it turned out pretty cool. I also learned how to anodize aluminum at home. (So my hands don't turn black from the aluminum grips) If anyone is interested, here is the link. But be careful, and take every precaution. Acid is not nice!

Dude that is some really nice work. Well done. With an old lathe, ie you can't feed some numbers into it from a computer, how do you work it? Keep stopping it and adjusting it?

You put the thing you want to shape in the lathe, it spins it around, and you have a number of different tools, with which you carve patterns etc, into the "thing" in this case handles for a bike. I made a screwdriver handle with it in Technology at school, pretty win.

Well, if you mean the grooves I cut on the grips, It's basically a really big bolt. The carriage that holds the cutting tool has an auto feed that you can engage and disengage. That long bolt the runs along the bottom of the lathe is what pulls or pushes it. There's just some gears that you switch out to get different threads---I.E. fine or coarse, 10 tpi or 50 tpi.

Ooooo! That thing on the table is a beauty. Reminds me of school when I was creating stuff out of metal. Fun times. We had an old machine in school that was so much better to use than some new ones. Pity though we didn't have any fancy ideas on what to make so our teacher gave us basically always boring projects.

and nice work on the handles.....im assuming you have some metal working experience, or else you are a damn prodigy
