I read this and was astounded!  What could this mean?  He apologizes?  For a seemingly insignificant incident brought to light of a soldier shooting a book?  Is it because Karl Rove isn't sticking a cattle prod up his butt?  Why is Mr "Anti-Diplomacy" all of a sudden giving a crap...and, and, "apologizing?"  Something big must be going down.  I doubt highly that he's trying to save face or get "started" on his presidential legacy.."of the guy who apologized and had the buck stop with him for once!"  Nah, there's too much to this than just a simple apology...which I'm sure took every bit of brush-clearing bravado machoism he could conjure!  Sure it was the BBC that reports it as I'm sure such pansihood would never make the FOX "news" broadcast or even a ticker...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7410367.stm

US President George W Bush has made a personal apology over the shooting of a Koran by an American soldier, the White House has confirmed.

Mr Bush made the apology during one of his regular video conferences with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki.

The soldier was sent home by the US military after the Muslim holy book was found riddled with bullet holes at a shooting range by Iraqi police.

The US military said last week that the soldier would be disciplined.

He was unnamed, but was said to be a staff sergeant in a sniper section.

'People's anger'

Mr Maliki's office said in a statement: "The American president apologised on behalf of the United States... promising to present the soldier to the courts."

Can anyone explain what the deal is?  This is about as odd as Arnold Schwarzenegger all of a sudden speaking perfectly annunciated English.

Maybe Ted Kennedy's not the only one with a brain tumor.

But seriously, I think it's partially the loss of Rove's control, partially because Cheney's checking out and preparing himself for the private sector again and maybe even some party pressure to not leave the place such a shithole for McCain.

It's Kennedy with the Brain tumor.  And Allah forbid Bush do anything you agree with.  It couldn't have been because he's a good President...

*edit. hehe gotcha!

Hey, I got no problem with him "becoming" a good president.  To be honest, since I am truly NON PARTISAN, I was actually impressed with his folksy, no-nonsense approach to things, and his general appearance surrounding 9/11 (even the rubble photo-op)...until I learned that was all he did..folksy photo-ops without substance or the nations interest in mind!  So seeing this person doing something modestly appropriate was quite baffling.  Who knows, maybe Cheney will start...nevermind..i don't know where to begin! lol

Yea. I hear you, but I realy don't think Bush is a quarter as bad as the media has made them out to be.

QFE. As much as I dislike the guy, I would love for him to prove me wrong and become the best prez ever.

Brin, I wish he would do more things I agree with. I don't have the weird, fanatical partisan loyalties some people do and want what's best for the country. Most of us don't have to resort to petty nonsense like insinuating the other side is muslim (apparently a horrible thing to be) when someone takes a small jab at our precious leader.

Anyway, don't even start with the "good leader" bullshit. Are you really one of the twenty-some percent who still thinks he's doing a bang-up job? I thought those people didn't use the internet.

This is a good move.  This means any number of American soldiers and citizens can now post videos of Quran desecration without the president or the government being blamed.  Sure, I doubt any soldiers will do this now, but I hope plenty of American citizens flood youtube with Quran desecration.  All the "sensitive" Muslims can suck on some free speech.  Hopefully, they can eventually evolve towards having a better temperament.

As hard as it may be to believe, those with "weird, fanatical partisan loyalties" also feel they want what's best for the country. That's the great thing about independent thought.

Yea? How has Bush really messed up your life?  Seriously what has he done to you?  All of my arguments on Bush lead to these questions and statements.  Which type of government do you find better?  A dictator or a democracy?  Saddam's kids FOR FUCKING REAL TORTURED its own soccer team.  For fucks sake the US is partly responsible for putting this monster there.  So doesn't the US have a repsonsiblity to clean up its messes (.ie putting him there in the first place)?  Are you a European? Hell if you are, you should love Bush and what he's done for your Euro... Right *elbow *elbow?  I personally don't think we spent enough on our troops.  But hell, is George Bush really that bad?  Ok. Fine. Lets say for your sake George Bush is the worst President in American history.  Look at the other models and political structures and what they at their worst produce... Satlin, Hitler, Pol Pot, Amadinajakt.  And guess what buddy.  My political model wins out every time.  Bush wins.  You fail.

Furthermore how do you know I'm not Muslim?  Jumping to conclusions?  Finally, I really don't think you have a clue as to what's good for the USA.  Scarier yet, Obama knows that too.

The bible paper had better be of the soft quality.

Whatever the reasons , the guy might have to offer such an apology, it would probably had been the best option.
