I have plugged in my 5.1 speakers and set it up. When using the REALtek HD audio manager you do the speaker test and all the speakers work as they should, the sound come out correctly, now question is: why cant i use anything else with 5.1, such as windows media player only plays out the two front speakers, and games and stuff.

Any way of changing that?

cheers

Not sure, but I think it's cause vista doesn't support hardware acceleration by default.

Make sure you have the latest vista drivers from realtek.

If that doesn't help, I would suggest OpenAL, but better to wait for a second opinion. I'm not that experienced with soundcards, and especially not in vista.

Games mostly have custom setting for it, or the need to autodetect it.

Windows media player is a bit more tricky.
My solution for it was: (probably not the best solution though)
Install CCCP codec pack
Rename the built in mp3 codec from WMP. It is in C:\Windows\system32 and named MP3DMOD.DLL Just append .BAK or something.
configure the mixer built into the cccp codec to also output to the rest of your speakers.

Start > Control Panel > Sound > Click on 'Speakers' once and hit 'Configure' down at the bottom left.

Is it seen as 5.1 there?
