And newegg doesn't carry the 226BW anymore. Any recommendations?

Anyone know anything about this Samsung monitor,
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6824001268

or this Acer one?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6824009094

Plus what was that whole deal about the "A" and the "S" panels on the 226BW, something about quality??

Budget < $300 USD

Take a read here about the panel differences. 1680x1050 means 22" basically, so I'd consider any Samsung / DELL (although make sure it has 16.7 million colours, I have a funny feeling the 22" DELL only has 16.2 {although...I've never seen either in real life so I don't know how much the difference is - I just heard it was "noticable})

I like it and it's cheap.
800:1? That's nothing. My 150€ monitor from 2004 has 700:1.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I realize that, which is why the monitor is $70 cheaper than the Samsung equivalent.  I've never been too discerning with things like colors and contrast so it works for me.

Edit:

Actually I think the 226BW is only 700:1.  It says 3000:1 DC in parentheses, not sure what that means, but I'm assuming the 700:1 can be compared to the 800:1 of the Chimei.

i have the same one and love it also (didn't see the point in paying like $60-75 for less than 1/2" of screen size) but it seems it's also no longe on new egg

syncmaster 2232BW then, its the pebble one so it looks awesome and actually has the exact same specs of the 2262BW but looks a lil bit more

OK, newegg officially fails for not stocking either the 2262 or the 2232, those bastards.

How could you have 16.2 million colours using a binary colour (bitwise) representation scheme? That's just not possible.

I'm not especially keen on either of those monitors, since the colour reproduction is a bit pants. TN based panels just don't cut it as far as I'm concerned. I like the Dell 2407WFP HC a lot (or the 08 version, but you can often pick the 07 up for cheaper), but that's a 1920x1200 display, as is the 245T (not the 245B though, it has icky colours) from Samsung....

Don't buy a TN panel. They're for chumps.

BTW: Don't pay any attention to the DCRs listed by Samsung. They are lies. Pure and simple. They do not actually give those contrast ranges, or even close to them. The dynamic ratio brings it to a higher figure than the listed static contrast ratio, but nowhere approaching what they claim.

I could have sworn one of the DELL 20" / 22" had 16.2 and not 16.7, maybe it was just a list error

Based on 8-bit per channel colour, that's 3 channels, so 3x8= 24-bit. 2^24 = 16.7 Million.

The other common alternative is 6-bit colour with dithering, which is vastly inferior.

You also seem not to be taking into account the fact that there are various different models available for the different screen sizes. Dell and Samsung offer VA based panels at slightly higher prices than the more popular TN panels, but the colours on them look a lot nicer. They're obviously not in the same league as the top end S-IPS panels (though Dell do some S-IPS based displays, I dunno about Samsung, Apple certainly do some very nice ones which are in most of their desktop systems (except the piece of shit that is the 20" iMac)), especially the really fancy ones from Eizo.

Panel type is a vital consideration when purchasing a monitor and I wouldn't even consider getting a TN based panel, like all those suggested by anyone in this thread.

Yeah the 2253 BW is kickass! 2ms, and 8000:1 Contrast Ratio!
