800:1? That's nothing. My 150€ monitor from 2004 has 700:1.

I realize that, which is why the monitor is $70 cheaper than the Samsung equivalent.  I've never been too discerning with things like colors and contrast so it works for me.

Edit:

Actually I think the 226BW is only 700:1.  It says 3000:1 DC in parentheses, not sure what that means, but I'm assuming the 700:1 can be compared to the 800:1 of the Chimei.

How could you have 16.2 million colours using a binary colour (bitwise) representation scheme? That's just not possible.

I'm not especially keen on either of those monitors, since the colour reproduction is a bit pants. TN based panels just don't cut it as far as I'm concerned. I like the Dell 2407WFP HC a lot (or the 08 version, but you can often pick the 07 up for cheaper), but that's a 1920x1200 display, as is the 245T (not the 245B though, it has icky colours) from Samsung....

Don't buy a TN panel. They're for chumps.


BTW: Don't pay any attention to the DCRs listed by Samsung. They are lies. Pure and simple. They do not actually give those contrast ranges, or even close to them. The dynamic ratio brings it to a higher figure than the listed static contrast ratio, but nowhere approaching what they claim.

Based on 8-bit per channel colour, that's 3 channels, so 3x8= 24-bit. 2^24 = 16.7 Million.

The other common alternative is 6-bit colour with dithering, which is vastly inferior.

You also seem not to be taking into account the fact that there are various different models available for the different screen sizes. Dell and Samsung offer VA based panels at slightly higher prices than the more popular TN panels, but the colours on them look a lot nicer. They're obviously not in the same league as the top end S-IPS panels (though Dell do some S-IPS based displays, I dunno about Samsung, Apple certainly do some very nice ones which are in most of their desktop systems (except the piece of shit that is the 20" iMac)), especially the really fancy ones from Eizo.

Panel type is a vital consideration when purchasing a monitor and I wouldn't even consider getting a TN based panel, like all those suggested by anyone in this thread.
