Hi,

Within a few months I'll be getting myself a new system, and this time I wanna build it myself. I'm looking at spending maybe $1500 or so.

First of all,
  • What graphics card?! I prefer nVidia over ATI, but should I go for the 8k series or newer 9k series?
  • Processor? Right now I'm running an AMD X2 5600+, but I wanna go with an Intel this time (better for overclocking?). So 2 cores or 4 cores? 4 cores a probably better - on the paper -  but can you really use it to it's fullest on vista or xp?
  • whats most important when choosing memory, the speed or the amount of GBs? E.g. is it better to go with 2 GBs of 1000 MHZ of ram or 4Gs of 700 MHZ?
  • I think I'm gonna go with Vista 64 bits, but I'm not sure. If the computer is good and fast enough i dint think it will be a problem. But I know that a lot of ppl don't like vista, so please fill me in on some of the big issues with Vista?

Thanks,

//Snorkelfarsan

Do you need a monitor etc, also?

well the new ATI hd4k series looks great, I'd consider that. Also most intel based chipset boards support crossfire (multi GPU)

[*] Processor? Right now I'm running an AMD X2 5600+, but I wanna go with an Intel this time (better for overclocking?). So 2 cores or 4 cores? 4 cores a probably better - on the paper -  but can you really use it to it's fullest on vista or xp?
for gaming stick to 2 cores. 4 hardly get used and overclock worse

[*] whats most important when choosing memory, the speed or the amount of GBs? E.g. is it better to go with 2 GBs of 1000 MHZ of ram or 4Gs of 700 MHZ?
size is way more important. With the efficient cache of modern CPUs, anything above 667MHz is tolerable. Unless you are going for those super high clocks no need to get faster than 800MHz

[*] I think I'm gonna go with Vista 64 bits, but I'm not sure. If the computer is good and fast enough i dint think it will be a problem. But I know that a lot of ppl don't like vista, so please fill me in on some of the big issues with Vista?
most people who hate vista don't know what they are talking about. If you use a modern PC without old peripherals or old software there won't be any problems. Vista is very stable nowadays and adds loads of nice new features. If you're concerned about the 3% loss of FPS vs. XP you can always tweak vista to be less of a resource hog. But in the end what difference do 97 vs 100fps make

DDR3 won't work on a 780i based board. Also intel chipset > nvidia.

Allright, thanks max.

Is x2 this card:
Sapphire Radeon HD 3870 512MB GDDR4

better then 8800 GTX?

It's not better than an 8800GTX. It's 10-20% slower, but it's a lot more card for the cash. I've got a 3870, and I couldn't be happier. It'll run everything maxed, with the exception of Crysis.

2x 3870 is faster than an 8800GTX.

I real-life performance, the difference between an 8800GT, GTX, GTS G92 or 3870 barely matters at all. It's just what you can afford.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

I'd recommend just getting the 8800GT

I heard that's a good card for not that much money, althuogh the 8800 GTS 512 is slightly better and only $30 more.

Is this card:
XFX GeForce 9800GTX 675M 512MB GDDR3

Better than a standard 8800 GTX?

got any popo lolo intersting?

GPU: Wise would be to wait for HD4870/4850 or Nvidia GT100/200 or whatever they will be called. They're going out in June. If one can't wait, 8800GT or GTS 512MB

Processor: E8400 is win, for more budget an E7200

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-P35/P45 or X38/X48 series. If planning crossfire, X38/X48. Only choose nforce chipset (680i/780i/750i/790i) if you go for SLI of Nvidia GPUs

Ram:  Well-branded 800 or 1066MHz DDR2. 2GB for 32-bit, 4GB for 64-bit

PSU: 500-700W branded PSU with good amperage on 12V rails (preferably 50+)

Cooling: Decent case and some 120mm fans for good airflow. For CPU an aftermarket cooler, such as Scythe ninja, GeminII, Zalman CNPS9700, or Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120.

Yes, but loses to 8800GTX at high resolutions. If you are not planning to build this right away, I'd wait till June for the Radeon 4-series. They are not going to be all too pricey, yet will offer great performance.

I recommended waiting for the 4k series because you said in the next months. If you want to build right away the 8800GT/GTS 512MB is terrific. IMO the 9 series isn't worth it

thanks for all the info guys, and i also feel that right now, the 9k series isn't all tha good. so i'll wait for the 4k ATI series.

but if I'd buy myself a rig right now, i thinks I'd go with something like this:

XFX GeForce 8800GTS 650M 512MB GDDR3, PCI-Express 2.0, 2xDVI/HDTV/HDCP,650Mhz

Gigabyte GA-X48-DQ6, X48, Socket-775, ATX, Silent Pipe, DDR2, 2xPCI-Ex(2.0)x16

Intel Core™ 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz, Socket LGA775, 6MB, 1333Mhz BOXED m/fläkt

Western Digital Raptor 150GB SATA 16MB 10000RPM

Samsung SpinPoint T166 400GB SATA2 16MB 7200RPM

Corsair TWIN2X 6400C5DHX DDR2, 4096MB Kit m/två CL5 2GB Dimm's, E.P.P and DHX

And what OS should I go with? i think I want a 64 bit version, Vista ultimate preferably, but it's so damn expensive.

And what does it mean when you buy an OEM version instead of a Full version? The OEM is much cheaper.

OEM is simply the disc and a CD key.  It is exactly the same OS as the retail, just not in a nice box and all that junk (which there charging like $200 extra for last time I looked ).  So yeah OEM version is fine.  Vista should be fine, I use it, admitedly not on my main computer but I have never had any real trouble with it (well anymore than XP).

I've been reading up on OEM licenses, and it seems that once you have installed it on a new system, you cant install it on another. even after uninstalling it off the first one.

Since I might want to upgrade my motherboard sometime next year or so, does that mean that i cant use the OEM and need the full version?

I copied over my version of XP Pro from my old machine to my new one. I just told the microsoft people (I called in, because at the time, I hadn't installed my ethernet drivers) and told them I reformatted. They gave me a new activation key thing.
