Aparently there are updates that always seem to need to be installed on my computer, every time i go to turn it off it will say "turn off to install important updates." It will spend 5 minutes "installing" then shut down. I'll boot it back up and the updates are still not installed. I try to update them manually but when it is finished then it just tells me that they weren't installed.

Any ideas

Do you have a "yellow shield" on your status bar ?

It may have just downloaded and then you can pick what updates to actually download ...

I have that yellow shield but every time i I just choose express install and it says none of them install.

EDIT: Well that was stupid, I chose custom install, selected all of them and none of them installed like normal but the yellow shield disappeared and it doesn't tell me to install anymore

EDITEDIT: The problems back... I want my karma back varegg, or you could keep it unless you find out my issue

It might give you an error code if you go to the Microsoft Update site. Give us that code, if there is one, and we will try to help.

Had to dust off IE to get to the site, didn't help much though, I don't really know what i'm looking for anyway.

No error code, it just says that these updates were not installed on your computer.

Try what Matt-F suggested.
Didn't work, and I had high hopes too, oh well.

If you don't want them, go Custom and uncheck them.

I had the same problem.

Go to Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services and find the "Microsoft Office..." something. I don't know the exact name since I no longer have it on my computer. Make sure you start the service, or restart it. Then try reinstalling the updates.

It's called 'Office Source Engine'.

Make sure that service is not disabled.  I have mine set to manual, and Office updates work just fine.

If other people are having trouble with regular updates not installing, I fixed this yesterday by registering some DLL's.  Do this at the command line:

Code:

net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe /s %windir%\system32\atl.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe /s %windir%\system32\jscript.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe /s %windir%\system32\msxml3.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe /s %windir%\system32\softpub.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe /s %windir%\system32\wuapi.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe /s %windir%\system32\wuaueng.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe /s %windir%\system32\wuaueng1.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe /s %windir%\system32\wucltui.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe /s %windir%\system32\wups.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe /s %windir%\system32\wuweb.dll
net start bits
net start wuauserv
wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow
