Former US president Jimmy Carter has said Israel holds at least 150 nuclear weapons, the first time an American president has publicly acknowledged the Jewish state's atomic arsenal.

Asked at a news conference at Wales' Hay literary festival on Sunday how a future US president should deal with the Iranian nuclear threat, Mr Carter put the risk in context by listing atomic weapons held globally.

"The US has more than 12,000 nuclear weapons, the Soviet Union (Russia) has about the same, Great Britain and France have several hundred, and Israel has 150 or more. We have a phalanx of enormous weaponry ... not only of enormous weaponry but of rockets to deliver those missiles on a pinpoint accuracy target," he said, according to a transcript of his remarks.

While the existence of Israeli nuclear weapons is widely assumed, Israeli officials have never admitted their existence and US officials have stuck to that line in public for years.

I certainly don't like the fact that India and Pakistan currently have nuclear weapon capabilities, however we all know that these are aimed at each other and we could likely rely on the MAD ideology, hopeful that neither side would be foolish enough to launch them for fear of the consequences.

But to hear that Israel has a Nuclear arsenal, that is both unchecked and unofficial can only destabilise an already tense situation and possibly cause Iran to develop such capabilities in a renewed arms race.

Didn't everyone already know they had nuclear weapons?

Israel has never officially admitted to having nuclear weapons. And has repeated over the years that it would not be the first country to introduce nuclear weapons to the Middle East.

I was referring to the last sentence of the OP, in which he says that this news will destabilize tensions. I was thinking that if everyone already knew it, nothing would practically be changed.

I don't know what would change other than "We think Israel is a nuclear power" turning into "We know Israel is a nuclear power".

Iran would have more incentive to develop it's weapons system would it not? I don't think it will offer as much of a deterant and certainly make the Iranians more wary of a possible strike which they could not defend against.

If Iran already knew Israel has nuclear weapons, which is (Israels ownership) the obvious incentive to acquire them for themselves, why would this announcement give Iran more incentive?

every country who has the means to make nukes, will try. It is laughable to believe that any country who can develop and improve it's nuclear arsenal wouldn't do so. In a perfect would, we would all shake hands and say "same team" but that aint happening, as much as I would love that..

I seem to remember that a reason for Israel being ambiguous about their nukes is due to some law in the US that prevents the US from giving any aid whatsoever with a country with a covert nuclear weapons program. As Israels nukes could be argued to be a covert nuclear weapons program, the US would risk some cocky lawyer taking it to court and bar the US from sending the billions of dollars of aid to them if either the US or Israel officially acknowledge their existence.

Except then Israel would just make it overt.

I'm not saying Israel doesn't have nukes...but since when does the opinion of a former US president who has been out of office nearly thirty years constitute definitive proof of Israel's arsenal?

Regardless, what he said was hardly a revelation (WRT who has nukes).

Since those nukes have (assuming they exist) been around more than 30 years, and if anyone other than the Israelis are sure it'd be the Americans.

Why? It's not like if you miss by a bit you fail to destroy the target...

Israel has been building nuclear plants in secret for decades, a whistle blower by the name of Mordechai Vanunu was kidnapped when caught and has spent the last 20 years in jail for exposing Israel's secret nuclear program.
The fact is that in addition to tanks, F-16s and cluster bombs, Israel has nukes

Also Israel is the biggest proliferator in the region. Not Syria, not Iran.
Israel is armed to the teeth and attacks everyone but the other country should shut up and receive this without flinching?

It is time to stop appeasing Israel.

one more thing i will add. 189 countries have signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which is a treaty to limit the spread of nuclear weapons. 5 nations on the list have nukes. Only 4 countries haven't signed this treaty. Israel with being one of them who hasn't signed and the only nation in the middle east who hasn't.

its one law for the west and one law everyone else.

They've got F-15's, Merkavas, Zeldas, Tavors and corner shot as well.

Oh lawd

Covering the main point though, everyone knows Israel has had nukes for a long time, they don't deny they do like Iran or Syria. Yet despite Israel's apparent 'take over ze world' policy they haven't used one. Shocker.

Iran and Syria don't have nukes, and Israel won't admit to having any.

Who here has ever accused Israel of trying to take over the world?

Sarcasm for those who believe Israel's sole purpose is to annhilate all those around them.

Also if Iran doesn't have nukes, thus nothing to hide, why are they so shady when it comes down to showing us their facilities? And why was a North Korean nuclear scientist seen visiting a Syrian military reactor? This being the same facility that was hit by Israeli jets not long after.

Iran and Syria don't have nukes, so its valid to claim they don't. Iran has been open about its nuclear programme. Israel jails its citizens for talking about it.
Israel isn't trying to take over the world, just Palestine. Your no angel even if you have nukes and don't use them...........

Maybe because they're trying to get them, or maybe because they're sick of Western nations dictating terms to them.  Probably both.
