Obama is half white.  So wtf is up with Obama getting 90+% of the black vote?  He has nothing to do with innercity America growing up or the civil rights movement if you look at his past.  I have never heard him say anything that every other politician says when it comes to race or other issues.

Is it just me or is this a skin color issue?  If he had white skin but still had a black father and the same background, would he still be recieving anywhere near the same support from the black community?

Probably not, tbh. A lot of people in America vote based on gender, color or birthplace.

Since most blacks have some portion of them that are white (research by Henry Louis Gates), then Obama is actually majority white.

I thought this was a MLK jr. was a Republican thread.... No? bye.  Wait.

I bet 30 years ago he wouldn't have gotten the black or white vote.

There is no evidence to suggest MLK was Republican by affiliation.  However, he probably voted for quite a few Republicans before Democrats became the main supporters of the Civil Rights Movement.

http://www.mydd.com/story/2007/1/8/154812/5456

"one can assume that Martin Luther King, Jr., did too [voted for Eisenhower]. It would make sense: at the time, his father was a staunch Republican and Democrats weren't that popular with African Americans in the South, even after Harry Truman.

But last year, the National Black Republican Association (NBRA) took a step further and claimed that King was a Republican. Period.

The NBRA claims "King registered as a Republican in 1956" -- something that King biographer Taylor Branch has found no evidence or mention of after years of exhaustive research. This means the NBRA interprets King's 1956 vote to say he was registered Republican, which is not at all an indication of party affliation. But that doesn't matter to the NBRA. They're so certain of their assumption, they're warping King's image by targeting black voters with advertisements and college Republicans with t-shirts. Still, let's put the lack of evidence aside and take a look at King's words and actions, starting in the year with which the NBRA brands his political legacy.

1956 was King's first full year as a leader in the civil rights movement -- a movement he hoped would rise above partisan politics. Of course there were many Southern Democrats who deserved and received King's ire, but he also criticized the Eisenhower administration for refusing "to make a strong positive statement morally condemning segregation" and demanded a civil rights bill stronger than the one passed in 1957.  Furthermore, King said the Southern Christian Leadership Council would "not blindly support any party that refuses to take a forthright stand on the question of civil rights," which, at the time, meant both of them....

If you ignore party label, one thing is clear: King was a liberal. And not just when it came to issues of race, but in terms of taxes, war, wages, poverty, jobs, education, international diplomacy, and free speech. And despite what groups like the NBRA say, his positions on "values" are not so clear cut. Bayard Rustin -- the aide who steered King toward nonviolence and organized the 1963 March on Washington For Jobs and Freedom (the full and historically forgotten title) -- was gay, and despite threat of smear, King continued to consult him. In 1966, King accepted Planned Parenthood's Margaret Sanger Award."

Ok, tell that to the black community who is voting for this man because he is black, and tell it to the white people who will not vote for him because of the same reason.

I am, but it is hard to convince African Americans, Asian Americans, and Hispanic Americans that they are also Americans first. They want to be racial diverse first and accuse us as racist when we recognize that.

If I were American I'd vote for him too. Not because he's black, but because he inspires people, and right now, that seems like what America needs. I don't see Hilary being very inspirational to anyone besides the occasional woman...

Hitler inspired people, a nation, and a fictional race.  Besides, I personally don't need inspiration as much as I need beer to get me through this election cycle.

No because America would rather have a black male as president than a woman of any race as president.

Unfortunately, a good majority of his votes will be from people who just want an african american as president, not because of his policies.

No, because Hillary is an evil, backstabbing, coniving bitch more interested in personal power than any kind of improvement for "the people" or the country, despite the drivel she tries to sell to the masses to get them to adore her (remember the 'tears' a couple months ago?).  We saw what she was like when Billy Boy was in office.  She has been elbow deep in every shady scheme about the Clinton's past, but people around her 'take the blame,' then end up either dead, in jail, or on her payroll.  I think she is a very amoral, charismatic person; able to get others to shield her from the fallout of her mad grab for as much power as she can wield.  I do not think she would let anything stand in the way of her 'quest.'

On the other hand, all I have against Obama is that he is a Liberal Democrat who plans to raise my taxes and ruin the health care system in the US (Yes, the health care system is already broken, but Obama (and Hillary) could make it even worse.  Oh, and he yells nothing but "Change!" and the drooling masses eat it up, even if it is nothing more than standard political hyperbole, they are getting even more worked up than they did over Howard Dean, and for as little reason.

A large portion of people voting against him will do it because of race as well.

America's racism is subtle.  We don't have official segregation and lynchings anymore and we even hire minorities enthusiastically (albeit through the racism of affirmative action).  But what really shows the more traditional racism of America is how neighborhoods are still mostly voluntarily segregated.  We also don't have many minorities in higher public offices.

Basically, it comes down to this -- a lot of white people befriend, hire, and respect minorities, but they still have hangups about living near them, dating them, or electing them to higher offices.  These more subtle forms of racism will stay with our society for probably at least another generation or two.

By the same token, minorities often resent white people or other minorities because of past or current grievances, but to assume most people of any race are one way is still racism.
