ISLAMABAD (AFP) - A suicide bomber blew up a car outside the Danish embassy in the Pakistani capital Islamabad on Monday, killing eight people and wounding nearly 30 others, state media and officials said.

There was no claim of responsibility for the massive blast but officials said it was likely linked to the furore over cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed which were printed by Danish newspapers.
An attack on a foreign embassy creates a huge problem for Pakistan’s new appeasement-minded government. They have all but ceded sovereignty in the frontier provinces, but the Pakistani government acts as the guarantor of security for foreign embassies, especially in the national capital. If they cannot keep the city safe for consulates and embassies, nations will begin withdrawing their emissaries, which will disrupt trade and diplomacy. If the government is seen as partnering with these terrorists, they will quickly find themselves isolated.

I fail to see how they're appeasement minded.  How would you propose to fight entrenched enemies in their terrain?

Having said that, it does create a big problem.  Interesting to see what the response abroad is.

Pakistan knows it has a terrorism problem, but are unsure of how to act. If they take the heavy handed approach it is likely to cause more attacks, increase anti-government groups to rally and worse highlight the fact there is a terrorism problem.

I don't think they could have done more to prevent the Danish embassy bombing myself, but it does show how vulnerable and easy a target the foreign nationals are.

Pakistan’s new government has signed a peace deal with pro-Taliban militants, in what some U.S. officials call a “victory for Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda.”

Under the terms of the 15-point plan, signed Wednesday in the city of Peshawar, the Pakistani army will withdraw thousands of troops deployed to the Swat Valley region, an area where officials believe bin Laden and other al Qaeda figures could be hiding. The militants have promised to stop suicide bomb attacks and hand over any foreign militants, according to Bashir Bilour, a senior minister of Pakistan’s Northwest Frontier Province.

“While the deal sounds good, it’s likely to be implemented badly,” said Richard Clarke, an ABC News consultant and former White House counterterrorism chief. “What this means is that the United States will continue to be threatened by an al Qaeda that has a safe haven where it can attract people from around the world, be trained and equipped and sent out to the United States and other countries around the world.”

A taliban spokesman, Muslim Khan, told ABCNews.com, “We accept the writ of the state and will no longer challenge it.”

Again, how do you propose they defeat them?

American tactics in Iraq, for one.

Why should they fight someone else's war?  Up until now, they had fulfilled all their duties in terms of keeping people safe.

That's the problem with terrorist action, unless a particular group takes action it is hard to tell which group carried out the attack.

The anti-Danish sentiment isn't felt only by Al Qaeda.

Ah yes, the great cartoon wars. I never proposed that Americans fight their war. They should stop treating them as an ally though. There is some success in Iraq. This can be figured out be simply noticing the lack in recent coverage.

Uh..........actually I was referring to Pakistanis fighting America's war.

Isn't that progress the result of the soldier boost?  The unsustainable soldier boost?

No it has been covered that the reason for a lack in recent coverage of Iraq is due to a number of reasons.

* It is competing with the Presidential Nominations news coverage

*It's become harder to gain audience attention to Iraq after so many years

*The news from Iraq isn't exactly unique. The events are often well covered by many if not all Press companies from all over the world.

And that's just a few reasons. I think it was News Hour on pbs which covered the fall in coverage over all media outlets, from newspapers and television and even the internet.

They have started drawing down. The success has more to do with Iraqis stepping up tbh.

@TheAussieReaper
Hmm, you might consider how much the war was talked about during the 2004 election (as in non stop). If anything it should be talked about more during elections season. It's normally a hot topic. It's no secret that death and mayhem sells.

Which leads to the logical conclusion that foreign nationals should be protected by foreign nationals,.. which in turn brings us to the PMC's.

Yep...  Pakistan is far more of a threat to the world than Iran is.
