I just wondered if there was a map website that I could use to measure the distance of a specific route. I cycle and want to know the distance of a route before i ride it.

So like you put a cursor or pin at the your start point and draw a line where you are gonna cycle and it tells you the distance of the drawn line, dunno if anything like this exists for free, cant seem to find this tool on google maps. Hope I've explained this well enough.

I remember you used to be able to do this on microsoft encarta maps. And before anyone suggests I use an odometer, I already use one, I just wanted to be able to plan the distance before. Hope someone can help, karma for suggestions.

How?

I dont wanna just put a start and destination postcode, I want to draw a specific route and have it tell me the distance, if googlemaps can do this great, but how? Maybe I'm just being stupid.

You can drag the route to change it, as far as I know.

So you can. Its kind of awkward though. It wants to keep taking the shortest route. So I have to keep adding via points etc., to stop it taking a shortcut.

Ah damn, there was a website that did this for running routes (would be the same for road biking).  Forgot the name though...

Google Maps

Create a map and stencil using the line tool your route. It will constantly give you the distance whenever you click to plot points.
