I'm going to have a few hours to run around Paris...any tips (other than the obvious...Louvre, Eiffel Tower, etc)?

Catacombs, and that place where they signed the treaty of versailles (that's actually a pretty touristy place but it's pretty).

A few hours won't be enough for the Louvre.  My advice?  Don't even bother.  Paris (and France in general) is the most unfriendly place I've ever traveled.  Even my brother, who speaks French pretty flawlessly, was treated like shit.  I would try to talk to people in English, get the cold shoulder and a "no speak English" type response, then my brother would engage them in French, and they would say, "no no no, no good".  I hope any of you Frenchies on here don't treat foreigners like shit as I was.

I would stay at DeGualle and read a book.

I'm going to be in Paris for a week, but only have one night that isn't taken up with official functions. If I go to the Louvre, I'll just sprint around to hit the high points (Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo, etc). I figured if I couldn't find anything else, I'd just do that and try to get to the top of the Eiffel Tower if nothing else.

Haha, the Mona Lisa really isn't that special you know. There are many MANY more impressive paintings, artefacts and sculptures in the Louvres. And the Eiffel Tower takes a lot of time. Time waiting at the base, time to get in the elevator, time to get to the first, second and third platform. The view from the third platform is worth it though.

Lol you're American.

With the Aussie accent we got away with quite a lot. Though I was almost punched in the head for repeating a question twice in french because I didn't understand the answer the dude gave me.

Versailles is a monument to human greed and indifference. Awesome specticle and I recommend you have a gander. It's just jawdropping to think the kings of France lived there while the people starved to death and their country's national debt spiralled out of control.

Bad luck. I was in Paris in 2005 for a week and didn't meet one unfriendly person.

If you plan on going up the Eiffel tower the best tip to avoid the waiting line is to reserve a table in the restaurant ...

Or just do as the locals, find a good cafe, order a snack and just sit on the sidewalk and watch the people going by ... Paris is the best city to do just that ...

There is the Stade De France, in the Seine St Denis which is awesome when seen from the highways.
You can also visit the Musée D'Orsay which has it's own good paintings and sculptures.
If you like heights you can climb the Tour Montparnasse and see the Eiffel Tower from it, it's a great view especially in the evening.

90% of native French people are very bad at learning foreign languages, don't be surprised if you don't find many people speaking english or any other language.

Was there the weekend before last coincidentally.

Centre George Pompidou if you like modern art.

Statue of Liberty on the Seine across from Maison Radio de France if you're feeling homesick.

Catacombs if you're into all things macabre.

Sacré Coeur Cathedral in Montmartre.

Jim Morrison's grave (among many other luminaries) in Cimitiere Pere Lachaise.

Batobus along the Seine (it's a boat) for a quick gander at all the Seine-side sights.

Eglise St. Sulpice if you're into The Da Vinci Code.

The Pantheon if you're into visiting the tombs of luminaries such as Victor Hugo, etc. (spectacular domed interior).

Dome D'Eglise and Hotel Des Invalides if you're into military history and would like to visit the sarcophagus of France's most admired military leader (and emperor) Napoleon Bonaparte.

1. Just pick a direction and take a long walk. You'll see stuff tourists don't see.

2. If your french is at all decent, go to the courts and watch a trial. I did that but my french sucks so I have no idea what I saw.

I want to go to Paris, is it really as romantic as it sounds? I mean the French can be quite odd at times.

I don't understand what's romantic about Paris, it's a myth that's been built to trap the tourists and suck their money, just like in Venice except that Venice is worth the money you spend and can be romantic.

My best advice for romanticism is to create your own, don't go where other people go and find a quiet spot in France or somewhere else in Europe.

If you go to the Louvre skip the Mona Lisa and head for the Winged Nike of Samothracia.

Can I clean this up a bit?
1. Find a club. Go clubbing. The Paris clubs are the best in France, you'll meet some interesting people (if you know what I mean) and have a blast. If not, try Montmartre. It's a jewish-y quarter of Paris, in the 9th arrondissement, lots of nifty shops and bistros and fun things like that. If you like to shop, Galeries Lafayette.
Oh, and there's the sewers. They're actually amazingly cool. And also La Villette, for science and shit like that.
Where are you staying??

To all those bashing parisians--I agree with you for the most part. However, we can be friendly if approached in the right manner. i.e. recognize their superiority, be extremely polite. And try to speak english with a Russian accent. Definitely NOT american accent. And we ca nlearn foreign languages--I think I'm adequate proof of that...

Anyhow, bienvenue and enjoy yourself, ok?

No idea what the second thing is, but the Mona Lisa wasn't that great. There were a bunch of people there to see a painting they'd already seen tons of times on the internet

And yeah, Paris is a great visit... I enjoyed it. Varegg has it right, there's something nice about sitting down and having a nice coffee with some sort of food and just chilling.

As I said, the catacombs are pretty cool. The Chateaux Versailles was pretty tight too, although if you visit Paris for a while you'll wanna get these special tickets from the government (they've got offices for it, can't remember the name) that lets you go in an express lane at any official museum or historical area.

I really wanna visit the south of France sometime, near the coast... I hear it's beautiful.

edit: Aw yeah, the sewers!

It's only one of the most beautiful Hellenistic sculptures imo. It's pretty special because her robe is draped as it would be if there would be wind. It depicts the goddess of victory as she descends on the front of a ship. Her wings are also half open from landing.

I have this idea in my head that it's some idyllic wonderland, with flowing green hills, blue skies, and beautiful cliffs near the sea. Amirite?

@Flemish, I might have seen it and just don't remember it
