CHICAGO —  A nurse who helped a Chicago police officer from a wrecked squad car and was later accused of stealing a weapon has been awarded $7.7 million by a federal jury for false arrest.

" In November 2002, a car ran a stop sign in Rachelle Jackson's neighborhood, slamming into a squad car. According to her attorney, Jackson, who was walking nearby, found the officer behind the wheel unconscious and the passenger, Officer Kelly Brogan, dazed.

She pulled Brogan from the wreckage. Soon after, police approached Jackson and told her that the driver's weapon had been stolen.

Jackson was accused of the theft. She was charged and spent more than 10 months in the Cook County Jail awaiting trial. Her case was later thrown out by a judge and Jackson sued the city of Chicago.

Defense attorney Andrew Hale said the amount the jury awarded Jackson was "excessive." "

$7.7 million I think is way to excessive but I would like to know ............ what did happen to the weapon

considering she spent 10 months in jail for an accuasation AFTER saving the life of the officer, she deserves it. Now if it was some yuppie from LA suing some poor shop or restaurant owner for a fly in their soup, then that'd be excessive and retarded.

Agreed. She saved the life of this officer, and spent 10 months of her life in jail for something she (probably) did not do.

Yeah, I really don't know who think's "Well, we could give her $7m, but that's not enough. $8m sounds like too much, but we want to look good, so lets make it closer to 8 than 7. $7.7m sounds like a good figure."

10 months in jail because of some asshole cop I think deserves $7 mill. tops. 7.7 is indeed excessive. She must've had a good lawyer.

And people wonder why no one stops to help others anymore.

It's sad when being a good Samaritan is more likely than not rewarded with a lawsuit than a thank you.

Just like a video that surfaced a few days ago. People all over the internet immediately were up in arms about the how society lacked values when no one stopped to help a man hit by a car. The reality was multiple people had already called 911, and the reason no one stopped to help was that the risk of being sued for helping were higher than the rewards.

7.7M is excessive. But then again, so is spending 10 months in jail awaiting trial.

Good for her. (Bad for taxpayers heh)

She shouldn't have been accused of that, but 7.7 million is excessive.  Most people would gladly stay in prison for 7.7 million, let alone jail.

I think the 7.7 million is well worth the 10 months of life they stole from her.

The US does have some ridiculous lawsuits at times, but in this case its actually somewhat deserved.  Nurse saves cops, cops arrest nurse for theft...go figure.

$7.7 million in tax payer money wasted because the police had a wild hair up their ass.  The nurse deserve every penny of it for helping their sorry asses and then spending 10 months in jail because she did what she has dedicated her life to.  I don't have a problem with her getting all that money although she's going to pay 2/3 of it in taxes and lawyer fees.

Ridiculous what they did. I don't think she'll ever help anyone without this on her mind again...

I'd want 7 mil if I had to stew in jail for about a year before the glacial gears of bureaucracy ground to a conclusion to let me go. And if anyone thinks this is wasted taxpayer money...frickin chump change compared to other shit the government wastes it on.

Guys, the Chicago police don't exactly have the shiniest reputation, either.

There are atleast 3 points of view to this case, that of the police, that of the nurse and that of the taxpayers.  I think most taxpayers will side with the nurse that she deserves every penny for the ordeal she went through because of the police actions.  However, the actions of the police mean that the taxpayers have to fork out the $7.7 million + attorney fees for police in question.  Where does that money come from?  Taxpayers ofcourse.  The city doesn't just print money to pay out.  And none of the above include how much it cost to keep the nurse behind bars in the first place for the stupidity of the police in the first place.  With all that being said, the loss or misplacement of a police weapon is a matter of concern not only to the officer it was issued to, but the community and to the fellow officers.  Every reasonable effort should be made to recover the weapon, but this is case where common sense was over ridden by outside factrors.  Anyone with a half a brain can see that nurse was more concerned about the injured officers than their weapons.

edited for grammar and spelling.

wow...so the 7 or 8 million should go to this lady.  who foots that bill?  you and i?  yup.  taxes will go up because of this.

these kinds of lawsuits are one big reason our healthcare costs are so high in the US.  lawsuits drive cost of insurance sky high.  this raises costs to the consumer.
these kinds of lawsuits are the reason nobody wants to help someone else in need - because heaven forbid if the person dies, you get sued because there is no such thing as an accident - it has to be somebody else's fault.

8 million is way excessive.  this lady has effectively just hit the lottery and won't have to work again.

nurses make what like 50k or thereabouts?  that's about 42k in salary she lost (10 months prorated).  this leaves about 7.66 million that was in compensation.  i wish i had this kind of luck.  i'd gladly spend even 2 years in jail (not prison) for this kind of cash.

You can't put a monetary value on the emotions and feelings she would have experienced while in prison. And that's why these payments can be anything.

She would've sued for loss of income from her job, for a start. Then emotional anguish. Falsely accused. Time spent in prison.

All of these things add to the amount made in the final payment.

Often after a judge makes such a ruling an appeal is made on some grounds, and the amount is generally then lowered to previous settlements.

She certainly deserves a lot of compensation, millions. But I can't help feel the amount she got is a little much. Maybe something like $3-5 million. I wonder what percentage her lawyer will be taking anyway.....

She deserved it:
She pulled Brogan from the wreckage and helped her to a nearby stoop. Soon after, police approached Jackson and told her that the driver's weapon had been stolen. When she was asked to go to the police station for questioning, she thought it was as a witness to the accident.

Instead, Jackson was accused of the theft. She was held for two days with little food and water and was threatened with violence until she agreed to sign a statement police had prepared for her. She was then charged and spent more than 10 months in the Cook County Jail awaiting trial.

Sounds like somebody fucked up bad and then tried a cya tactic. This is not unprecedented for some Chicago cops. Remember a few years back when all those death penalty cases were thrown out by the IL governor after it was found that several of the convictions rested on "confessions" beaten out of the accused by Chicago police?
