Over the past few days having xfire in-game has really been slowing me down and causing lots of lag. It really just came out of nowhere, I didn't change anything. Also, I only noticed it on CoD4 and Portal, but BF2 is still fine. I've been able to run xfire in-game for ages and haven't had any problems. I seem to only get framerate drops when I move the mouse around. If I sit still everything is fine. Also, when I bring up the xfire overlay, the speed returns to normal.

Should I reinstall xfire, or change some settings?

Thanks for any help

There probably is no solution. Xfire is a steaming piece of buggy shitware, but is unfourtunatly the only somewhat-popular application for in-game messaging.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Truth.  When I had a problem with Xfire, I was directed to the Xfire.com forums, which supposedly have an active and useful support section.  I can't remember if I found it useful or not, but it's worth a try.  Maybe the next update will fix the problem.

is it downloading while you play i have that problem allot. another thing do you have steam running cause sometimes they dont like each other. Also make sure you have the latest version and latest game updates for it.

XFire is all up-to-date. I don't have Steam running (though even when I do, I don't have any problems). And I told XFire not to download anything when I'm playing.

It's really weird and dumb that it only screws up when I'm in motion, and only on a select few games, and things are fine when I bring up the menu. Oh well.

I'll try the xfire forums if I'm not too lazy. Heh, but it's kinda nice being able to play a game and not get a bunch of messages popping, so I'll probably just stay off xfire and occasionally test it to see if anything is fixed.

Thanks for the feedback everyone

You could always turn in-game messaging off for CoD4 and Portal.  That might fix the lag and you won't have to sign off xfire.

I tried that. I logged off xfire but still had it running and still had the same problems. When I'm in-game, movement is very laggy, yet when I hit Scroll Lock + X (or End + X in my case) to bring up the menu, the game runs fine (but of course I can't play).

It's very weird and frustrating.

Xfire is doing this for me too. It slows opera then eventually locks it up, ventrilo slows down as well. Game performance isn't changed though.

Try disabling Video Capture...

Do you have a 64-bit O/S?

The recent X-Fire update has screwed stuff up for 64-bit. Google for the hotfix.

The thing is, that that thing isn't widely known. Xfire has got hundreds of times more users.

Give it some time and it might be, but your right: For now it isn't.

It'll sign you into XFire as well as your other IMs at the same time inside of the same client, so you can talk to all of the people while in game if that's any use.
