How much would it usually cost to install a door frame and a door.  I already have the door, so Im really interested to know how much is usually charged for frame materials and labor.  Ive had estimates between 175 and 200.  sounds like too much.

Yeah I'd say that isn't too bad of a price.

Go offer someone at Home Depot $50 and a case of beer.

usually around $40 or so per hour for labor. when they get the materials they will mark them up about 10-25%. shouldnt take any more than two hours to put up a door and frame it (as long as there is already the cut out for the door)

Don't you have to make a hole in the wall also, unless you're just replacing the frame and the door.

dude came by and told me that the door I already had wasnt the right kind. makes sense.

the entire frame has to be replaced and more than likely some drywall work is needed as well.   Im going to the home depot to the get the right door tomorrow.  he said the frame is going to cost two dollars per foot.

He's not talking pounds, that is Gunslinger, he's in the U.S.

That sounds about right, materials maybe $80 then double it for labor.

edit: I'll ask my dad, he would know much better than me.

if that's installation and finishing, it's not too bad.

As long as the opening is the right size, the frame just slides in, then you level and square it with shingles(wedges) and secure it to the framing of the structure.  then you trim it and you're done, as long as no additional wall work is necessary.

Pay a licensed contractor who will more than likely use day laborers from Home Depot...

He's cutting out the middle man and saving $$$.  Now, if contractors (licensced and unlicensed) refused to use day laborers or any other source of illegal employment, then I would say go for it.

I've got lots of construction experience ... built my own 3500 sq ft home.

The cheapest route would be to purchase and install a door with its own frame (pre-framed door).   Door installation is about 30 minutes to 1 hour.   Any basic handyman can do this type of job ... actually anyone handy with a hammer can do this.  Probably cost you about $150 to $250 to have someone come out and do this.

If you go with a custom frame, much more work ... actually a ton more work.  The last full frame I did took me 4 hours of work, and I had a helper.  Many more tools are involved (since you have to route out hinge and latch positions).   You'll need an experienced carpenter to do this work.  I would figure you would end up paying $500 for the installation.
