The past week or so I've noticed a hit in fps in every game I've played. While I used to run a solid +70 on BF2, it is now down into the mid 30s and 40s. CoD4 is the same way, once running +70 but now I'm lucky to break 45. There is also the occasional stutter in both games which has never happened before. I can't think of what could be wrong. I've cleared out about 50GB of space on my HD, defragged, checked for viruses, etc. all to no avail.

Intel P4 3.00 GHz
8800 GT 512MB
3 GB RAM
500 Watt PSU

Except for the CPU, none of the hardware is over half a year old.The GPU never goes over 70-75 degrees,so I don't think it's an overheating issue either...

Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

Give your computer a blow job...in other words, whip out the compressed air and get rid of all the crap inside your case. I just did that to mine tonight and a dust cloud came out.

If that fails, maybe a video card firmware re-install will fix it.

I agree with the undusting, but a video card firmware reinstall? I'd fix drivers before I start messing with that.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

And you should get constant 100fps instead of 70 in bf2 all high, even that the CPU is limiting...

yeah. I have no idea how anyone could fuck up their graphics card firmware/bios without failing miserably on a bios flash. Failed flashes usually leave you with a card that doesn't work at all ...
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

In this day in age, I don't even know why you would mess with the video card BIOS...

Exactly. Many cards can be voltmodded and speedmodded through BIOS, eliminating any soldering or software needed, thus increasing safety and performance.

well i just dusted it out a few days ago so i don't think that's it.i'll try re-installing the drivers and see how it goes.

EDIT:drivers didn't make a difference,both games are still chugging a long at 35-45 fps whenever i enter a firefight.
EDIT2:i tried installing the EVGA drivers instead of the NVIDIA ones.i get maybe 5-10 more fps but it's still pretty low.
