McCain campaign communications director Jill Hazelbaker emails: “Today, Barack Obama has revealed himself to be just another typical politician who will do and say whatever is most expedient for Barack Obama. The true test of a candidate for President is whether he will stand on principle and keep his word to the American people. Barack Obama has failed that test today, and his reversal of his promise to participate in the public finance system undermines his call for a new type of politics. Barack Obama is now the first presidential candidate since Watergate to run a campaign entirely on private funds. This decision will have far-reaching and extraordinary consequences that will weaken and undermine the public financing system.”

I have no idea what difference it makes. Does it not just mean that he isn't wasting public money on it?
He's broken records with the amount of private donations that he's managed to roll the obama election roadshow. Its the logical step forward.
And McCock isn't so inncocent either
The Obama campaign team said Mr McCain was already using privately-raised funds in his campaign and that the public finance system was "broken". Mr McCain's campaign was being financed by Washington lobbyists and special interest groups.

Under the Lisbon Treaty this is the kind of shit we'll have to put up with over the next few years... having one man represent the disparate views of 450 million people and unaccountable Brusselites taking envelopes from megacorporations...

The difference is McCain never said he would. Obama did, and ended up breaking his word.m3thod wrote:

I agree; they are politicians- what do you expect. I just get really tired of people cannonizing Obama, when he is no different from any other politician.m3thod wrote:

Obama sucks. McCain sucks. Anyone you may be interesting enough, dedicated enough, smart enough, and honest enough to make a decent President is either corrupted or edged out early in their political career. I weep for the future; by future, I mean now. Oh well.
Obama is just the lesser of 2 evils for me.imortal wrote:

Yup. But you are in the UK, not in the US. I submit to you that my priorities are different from yours. And I am the one that gets to vote for one of them.m3thod wrote:

That's a good explanation. I think it was a mistake for Obama to say yes to that question a while back, but....Kmarion wrote:

It's pretty rich hearing conservatives criticize Obama for using only private funds for his campaign. TRUE conservatives are against public campaign financing, because it involves subsidizing campaigns with tax money.
I disagree with Obama's idea of reforming campaign funding, but ironically, his campaign itself is proof that no regulation is needed. When the people are actually active in heavily funding a candidate, that candidate will not bow to as many special interests as most do.
So, if anything, McCain should act like a true conservative and switch to a privately funded campaign as well. The only reason why he wouldn't is because Obama has raised so much more money than he has.

EDIT:
Aside from admitting that he doesn't know how to use a computer apparently McCain also doesn't understand that his previous statements are easily obtained on something called "The Internet".
VAN SUSTEREN: You've tried so hard to rein in politicians on campaign finance. Governor Dean has opted out. Senator Kerry has opted out. President Bush, I don't know if has opted out, he's certainly going to opt out. I mean, they've all sort of passed campaign finance. What do you think about that?
MCCAIN: Well, remember that the presidential financing is unique because it has public financing. No other federal election does. We're gong to have to change that. It worked well from 1976 until about 1990-something. We'll probably have to increase the amount of matching funds. But I would like to say, if I hadn't run for president of the United States, we would never have passed campaign finance reform. And of course, I'm still gratified that the United States Supreme Court upheld it as constitutional.
VAN SUSTEREN: But haven't they sort of, for lack of a better words, the richer candidates right now, whether it's rich because they got it on the Internet or for whatever reason -- haven't they sort of found a way to get around the campaign finance?
MCCAIN: No. First of all, again, the presidential it's matching funds, and our legislation did not address the presidential primaries. But second of all, I think it's wonderful that Howard Dean was able to use the Internet, $50, $75, $100 contributions. That's what we want it to be all about. We want average citizens to contribute small amounts of money, and that's a commitment to a campaign. So I'm for that. I think it's a great thing. I think the Internet is going to change American politics for the better.

No, it doesn't matter. I already have enough reasons not to vote for Obama.
grassroots campaign of made up of 1.5 million Americans
1.5 of 300 = 0.5%
lolwut
Politicians are always going to play to their strengths. McCain will get fat checks from rich white people, Obama will get money from people desperately reaching for their pocketbooks in the name of change.
That's all there is to it, there is no moral superiority on either side.

You think Obama doesn't have a bunch of deep pockets on his side either? The average contribution to his campaign is $1000. But look at those poor, disparet people Obama has in his corner. You know, like Oprah.Flaming_Maniac wrote:

Of course there are people making big donations. McCain surely has ten dollar donations. That doesn't change the typical demographics that are contributing to them, or more importantly the demographics he would like you to think are the ones contributing to him.imortal wrote:

- Low estimate: Average donations stayed at $128/donor: ~$56 million
- Medium estimate: Average donations went to $175/donor: ~$76.5 million
- High estimate: Average donations increased to $321/donor: ~94 million
http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/ … money.html
http://www.ohio.com/news/19937874.html• Obama's average donation locally is lower than either Clinton's or McCain's, at $321. Clinton's average is $398 and McCain's is $589.
Either way you are way off the mark.
