I will copy this from another form I post on, this is my own post so I dont need to credit anyone

Now that ATi has began releasing it's new card's. Nvidia has began flexing it's muscle to answer them. Namely, a 55nm version of the 9800GTX is going to be launched at a price point around the $230 mark. The current 9800GTX is going to drop to at least $199. This is happening purely because ATi is offering the 4850 for $199 and in the preliminary benchmarks circulating around the net, Nvidia is being beaten by the new competion.

I am not sure how this lot got there hands on the new nvidia card when it's not due untill mid july, however, here is the first comparison of the 9800GTX+ vs 4850.

Preview:  http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=580

Early comparison:  http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/amd … efault.asp

I'll mention one or two small details.

Number one, these where older drivers for the ATi card, not the newer ones that have official support for 4series cards so the ATi card in this test is staggered.

Number two, It is on an Nforce board which is obviously giving an edge to nvidia

Number three, ATi did not intend to take on the 9800GTX. It was supposed to go against the 8800GT (9800GT).

There is obviously scope for change. Nvidia are releasing a driver of there own with physics support. ATi is apparantly activly encouraging overclocking, and probably most importantly, the 4870 is yet to be benched. Yet if the figure of atleast 30% quicker than 4850 is to be believed, that put's it well out of the 9800GTX+ territory, and put's it squarely at the GTX 260 (which insidentally, costs $100 more).

Regardless if u are an Nvidia fanboy or ATi, or, like me neither, atleast the monoply of nvidia is dead and as a result both companys are going at each other like a pair of animlas, and this is only a good thing for you and me .

9800GT will be a farce and 9800GTX 55nm? Should i expect a 7600GT 55nm? You get my point? They are just refurbishing older cars. I know the structure is smaller and they will overheat less but is it really that faster than the previous 9800GTX?

Agreed.  It comes back to the argument that the 9800GTX should of been called something along the lines of 8900 (or in my opinion, 8800GTS OC, cause that is all it is).  And come on, 9800GTX+, you would think they could give it something a bit cleverer than that.  My money would of been on 9800Ultra, or 9800 dont give money to them or baby jesus will cry

nVidia's recent naming of their products suck major arse. It's a flood of updated cards, new cards with old names, die shrinks and cores.

I think the 8800GT and all other G92 cards should be either 9 series or 8900 series. 8900GT beating 8800GTS sounds pretty reasonable, right? 7900GS was equal to 7800GT. 9800GTX should be either 8900GTX, and the plus version should be Ultra, just as mentioned.

nVidia just went for the 280 stuff to get out of their own mess.

Also, doesn't the new ATI cards use a lot less power than the new nVidia cards?

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

It should have been

8900 GTS (8800 GT)

8900 GTX (8800 GTS 512)

8900 Ultra (9800GTX)

8900 GX2 (9800GX2)

Then GT200 would have been the 9800 *** series with the 280 being GTX, and 260 being GTS.

But that would've made sense. Nvidia doesn't work like that.

That's what they're doing in relation to nVidia. It's obvious that the R700 = HD 4870 X2

Is anyone even going to buy the GT 200 series of cards?

edit:

Really, at the end of the day. Is there any reason to upgrade? I'm talking about people who already have decent cards atm. Because the PC gaming market is almost at a stand still.

Somewhat.  A lot of the people that are picking them up are doing so to dable with CF (4850 in CF is kicking ass) and the 4870 is a fairly nice upgrade for even 8800GTX/Ultra and 9800GTX owners.  If you are happy with your current setup and what it is managing then no, but I would wager a lot of people who are buying them are in that situation anyway, they just want more.

GTX 260/280 is a non starter as far as I am concerned for now.

X2s currently don't work properly and I cba to wait for a fix. When the 9800GTX+ is released i'll look at the benchies and see what gives me best performance / PPU. ATM nvida cards are way better than ATI ones at fah
