So I was in a hotel this morning and got a copy of the USA Today. An interesting article caught my eye. The survey that was summarized in the article and has more in depth coverage on the online article seems to show that Americans are blazing a new path in regards to religious beliefs. They're not abandoning their organized religions as many in Europe have done, but they are, for the most part, becoming concerned with the idea of spirituality and morality in an abstract sense rather than following the "do's" and "don'ts" that are often laid out by a religious organization. I highly recommend the interactive graphic of the article as well.

The silly splitting into camps is what leads to wars.

My wife drags me to church on holidays, it never fails; the preachers goes on to define the steps that I must follow to get to heaven right before the collection plat gets passed around. pfft. Preachers are businessmen. Spirituality is not for sale.

78% overall say there are "absolute standards of right and wrong," but only 29% rely on their religion to delineate these standards. The majority (52%) turn to "practical experience and common sense," with 9% relying on philosophy and reason, and 5% on scientific information.
So, all those religious folk who love to demonise atheists by saying "atheists are incapable of morality"...what have you got to say about this, hmm?  What about all those religious types who get their morals from "practical experience and common sense" or "philosophy and reason", its okay for them but not for us?  (not attacking all religious people here, just the atheist-haters)  Go on, give me your best shot.

if anything, some atheists are more moral, we don't need the threat of eternal damnation to make us behave, or the promise of heaven to make us fight for your freedoms.

and there aren't many hardcore religious types around these parts, stingray's as close as we get, and even he is by no means a radical christian
