I am in the process of buying my self a new rig. I'm going with a E8400 (which I'm going to overklock) and a HD 4850 (buying another later so I can go crossfire). Will the 550W PSU be able to handle an overclocked system with two HD 4850? Or do I need a 650W PSU?

Thanks,

Power Supply: 450 Watt or greater power supply with 75 Watt 6-pin PCI Express power connector recommended.
Whats the price difference between 550W and 650W Corsair? I personally would go with 650W so I'm able to run 2 cards in crossfire if I so choose. But thats just me.

I´d go for a 650W PSU also... I think everything under 600W is kinda outdated nowadays... And always remember, in a future not too far aways you want to upgrade you rig anyways...

Right now the 650 has the same price as the 550, it's limited offer. So I think I'll go for that then.

Definitely get the 650W cuz 550W for Crossfire is questionable.

650W if not more...

Yeah, go with the highest you can afford. If not, you might be kickin' yourself in the arse latter on if some monstrosity gets released and you want to get it, but can't because your PSU is inadequate.

Also, modular cabling is good.

And 8 pin PCI-e cables are becoming the norm, so try to get one that has those as well.

550w could probably run it, if the amps are decent, but you should go for 650, so that you've got some headroom.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
