I haven't brainwashed anyone in years. And the USAF makes you bathe regularly so smell shouldn't be an issue.

And in my 13+ years of active duty, I've only met a handful of what I would deem to be "neocons"...and they were all retired.

Well i understand where you guys are coming from but were missing the point of what i asked!

I'm curious on how 5x as many people died in other wars but our forces are spread thin. That's what im asking. I've had family members serve in iraq to. I know how it is to worry whether or not they will come home.
Because during those wars we had 2x as many people in the army at the time.  Today's army is smaller/more versatile, has better weapons and technology! We dont need a million man standing army to get shit done.  We can compensate for less "grunts on the ground" with air power, naval power, better tanks etc.

You dont need 400,000 men to invade a country anymore like the old days. . . . . .

I guess when they say "spread thin" they are meaning ACTUAL "bullet catchers" on the ground.  We invaded a country of 27 million people with a 100,000 + force. . . . . I think its safe to say the US military knows how to beat ass! It got a tad hairy last year with the insurgency goin as it did, but now the country is moving in the right direction.  Lets face it kids, the "Surge" worked!

How many people are dieing isn't necessarily a good way to judge how thinly it's spread.  If the enemy only operate in areas without a military presence, then you wouldn't expect many deaths.

Training has been more refined, new weapons systems, fixed the M16, Causality evacuation improvements.

I won't pretend to know any more about why more people died in Vietnam. That and degrading the sanctity of human life any more could possibly send this forum to Hell when it closes.

Also, do not forget the effectiveness of armor and medical advances that have been made since WW2.  The use of medivacs has saved countless numbers of soldiers and civilians, cutting down the response time in getting the wounded to proper medical care.  Also, the use of armor, and in armor technologies, minimizes the number of wounds to the vital regions of the body, thus increasing survivability.  It does mean that we have a higher proportion of people who have lost limbs as opposed to dying, however.  Looks really bad, but a lot of those walking aroung minus a limb would have been dead 20 years ago.  Then you can add inventions such as Quik-Clot, that help control bleeding in a battlefield enviroment.

The current push toward high-tech in the US military as a result of the all-volunteer force.  The powers-that-be decided that if they were going to have a smaller, but more motivated force, that they would give them the technology and training to make those people as effective as possible.  However, one of the downsides is that when what you need is raw power/ boots on the ground, you may not have enough boots.  Another effect (in no small part due to the modern media style) that each death is publicized and thrown on screen.  In a smaller force, each death is a larger % of the whole.

As for "spread thin,":

There are currently 10 full army divisions.

Put 3 divisions in a war-zone.  3 of those just got back of the war zone, and are trying to recover and get back to strength.  3 are training up to prepare to deploy to replace the units currently deployed.  1 division in Korea, maintaining the "cease fire." 1 division in Germany. 3 divisions doing "home guard," essentially resting and conducting 'normal' military operations in their home bases.  If my basic math skills are still with me, that adds up to 14 divsions.

There are currently 10 full army divisions.

1ID, 2ID, 3ID, 4ID, 1CAV, 1AD, 10ID (Mountain), 25ID, 82ID (Airborne), 101ID (Air Assault)
There are also indipendant regiements, about 1/3 the size of a full divison.  2ACR, 3ACR, 501IAR are just some examples.  It still does not add up to enough.
