Dubai is all about huge engineering challenges these days. Look at some of the hotels they're building, or that map of the world they build out of islands.

No possible way to put an elevator or stairs in that thing.

And people would become sick just from it rotating...

Hmm wonder what restrictions they gonna have ( maximum of 1-2 turns a day? week? ) if it gets built i could imagine the pain living between to turners who loves to change their view a few times every day it must make a hell of a noise.

I think the center of the building would be solid and there´s where the elevators/stairs have to bee ^^

lol so you have to wait for the lift(elevator) access door to swing round again

Saw this on the web at work today. I work in a structural company and we always slate Architects...but we were damned impressed by that!

Be interesting if it actually works...although I cant see how the staircores are liftshafts would work...reinforced concrete cannot exactly be rotated And if its 80 stories high...thats a HELL of a weight to turn. I also cannot see how that is structurally possible.
What if Floor 1 is rotated at 90 degrees...and Floor 2 is at 270 degrees...you wouldnt get access to the lift!

Not only that, but how would the columns work? Each floor would have to be single storey in terms of column heights, and each floor cantilevered from the central core. Thats a fucking huge (solid) central core to suspend that sort of load from, ignoring a liftshaft and staircores....and that would also take away from the free rotation.

Yeah, Im toooo focused on my job

Mm i´m really interested how it´s gonna look if/when it´s done the core you mention must be massive to provide stablilty and carry all that load.
Fun with these crazy ideas though.

its an interesting idea but not very practical in my opinion. But since in Dubai everything has to be a tourist attraction why not build it

It pwns the Vienna DonauTurm

Its a big penis with a restaurant on top at the height of 150 meters. The restaurant rotates slowly and gives a kick ass view of Vienna as you eat. Great experience... but a rotating skyscraper

There are nearly identical towers in Dallas, Seattle, San Antonio, and Kuala Lumpur that all rotate and have a restaurant at the top.

I can't wait until Dubai pisses off some terrorists.  So many targets for them, should make CNN video interesting again.

Yup, which is fine and works

How an entire building where every floor can freely rotate in isolation from the others is another matter

Of course it does. They get a LOT of money from tourism, and that money's supposedly going to fuel their economy so they don't have to rely on oil exporting in the future.

kinda wondering, "you can control your view" (news source) so 1 level rotates, but then 1 family (person) or 1 guy controlling that floor (can there only be) imagine 4 houses on 1 floor, neighbour A "lets go to the left" neighbour B "lets go to the right", neighbour A "DAMN IT CHARLES!!!!!!!!!!!"

would be cool if it would actually work tho.

you would have a center where the outside structures (apartments) move from (center stable, outside movable) it would just be automatic that the door from the elevator, or if it's selected that elevator A moves to Apartment A that Apartment A moves into position that you would actually be able to enter your apartment.

Considering that its a freeking rotating skyscraper I doubt that there will be more than one apartment per floor

If it gets made it will be made for uber rich people who wouldnt like to share a floor with other people

The numbers i read stated apartments from 120 m2 up to 1200 ( that would be a floor i guess ) the prices ranged up towards 36 milllion dollar.
But then nothing is sealed in stone so everything will probably look different when it´s done.

time to turn a floor would be 1-3 hours gotta plan your view if you want to work on the tan.
