This is actually good news for Sony customers. It means we spent little on a product that obviously has had a lot of time and money go into it. Unlike the xbox which is over priced for what it is.
Flawed logic. Spending $10,000 on a fur coat that is normally $100,000 is still a waste of money.
But spending the $300 on a ps3 is not a waste of money, because it's not simply a fur coat. If you were to just buy a ps3 for the blu-ray player you've already saved money.
But what is a blu ray player actually worth? Not how much do they sell them for, how much are they worth?

You spent $600 on a console. Think about that. A fairly large family could eat off that for a month, but instead you got just a console. No extra controllers, no games, just the console, and the game line up wasn't even mediocre until a few weeks ago. The Wii on the other hand, you could buy the console, extra controllers, four games, and still have a cool $100 compared to buying a PS3. I don't really care if it stands up and walks, paying more than $500 for a console that essentially just plays games is absurd.

they're losing money at the moment because the fixed costs divided by the number of units sold plus the cost of building each unit is less than the price of said unit. provided they have the cost of each unit covering the cots of manufacturing it and at least a  bit more, they'll eventually make a profit.

Sony = FailIf a blue ray player costs over $500 alone then why charge less than that if they plan on making a profit?
I hear that the Blu-Ray player of the PS3 is substantially lower quality than the actual players in the box (Primary Blu-Ray players)
Sony has won the BluRay Vs HD-DVD war though, and that will be huge for them. Part of the reason they won is the fact the PS3 had a blu-ray player in it. It may not have been perfect, but the movie studios still preferred one that was already quite established. It wouldn't surprise me if they didn't care about losing money on the PS3 knowing it was part of their plan to win the format war.
This is a good point. Don't know how true it is, but if Sony makes billions on blue ray because they lost millions on PS3 is that so bad a thing? (not real numbers, just making an example)

The PS3 still has a lot of life in it, I still know quite a few people who WILL own a PS3, but don't yet.

Maybe Sony should try the MS route and build their systems with shoddy components that fail regularly.

On a side note:

The fact that the Wii has done so well baffles me. It's a game cube with special controllers.
Mines still running fine after tearing it apart and modding it. Pretty good parts to me.
The only one with out problems is the guy who has already had to tear it down and modify it... I dunno if that is such a great statement for reliability

Hey, I definitely wouldn't mind buying hardware at lower than production cost. That's better than employee discounts.
