I'd rather wait for the 4870x2 tbh, but that's a nice choice for a midrange card for now.

I hit 9651 3dmark with E2180 @ 3.45GHz, and 8600GT SLi. My CPU score is 2996.

Yes, his CPU bottlenecks like HELL.

My whole system cost about what the HD4870 costs, and gets 1 mark more..

@OP, OC that E6400 to 3.5GHz, now.

Nice! I'm getting that card too with my new PC mid July!
It'll be nice when I can finally play Battlefield 2 on maximum settings. My previous graphics card was a 7600GT.

Any pros and cons about the card so far?
Pros:
Performance
Quiet (Well, quieter then the vacuum cleaner stuck on the X1900 anyway)
Short, so if I buy a new case I won't have to worry about it not fitting
Price
Cons:
It's bright red. As I've said, I don't really mind it but a black/green Nvidia card would have been better aesthetically.
Runs rather hot, but not stupidly so
Needs a relatively large amount of power

There is no comparison.  I had an X1950XTX, then my 8800GT, and now a 4850, and the difference in that is massive.  With the extra power of the 4870, you won't even think it's the same computer.
Absolutely. With this single upgrade, I've doubled my PC's performance in game.
I remember from the system specs thread that you (Kyle) have the same system as me, and our 06 scores are about 50 points off from each other. Any performance gains you see here will be the same for your system.

What power connecters does this beast have?
2 x 6 pin. Most PSUs that are over 500W come with this as standard, though two molex-to-6 pin adapters do come in the box.

Yeah, Zalman CNPS 9700NT. It's nickel-plated, so it's not enitrely black, but black with a silvery sheen.

But very nice buy. (At $413 US though, that's a little much... It should have been priced around $300)
That would be $413 Aus.

All computer parts cost more down here, especially if you live in Perth as i believe Super_Dragon does.
Yeah . I've seen them under $400 in some of the eastern states stores, but once you include shipping and such, you don't save much.

And yeah, I really need a new CPU. As I said before if I had got the CPU first I would get a large 06 score increase but bugger all in-game performance gains. I've been looking at some of the available ones, the 8400 and the Q6600 seem to be at a good price point ($2-250) and perform well, but can anyone tell me which is better? The 8400 is 600MHz faster but the Q6600 has four cores. Which would be better for gaming?

Speaking of gaming, I just ran Crysis v1.1 for the first bit (clearing out that first and second camps). I used to run it at 1440x900, no FSAA and medium settings for everything except for shadows, which were on low. With the X1900 this gave me 20-30 FPS during most scenes (it went to about 15 when looking over large areas, such as from the hill looking onto the first camp).
With this card at the same settings (but with shadows on med) I got about 50 FPS, and during firefights it didn't go below 40. In fact, I can't recall it dropping below 30 at any point.
I put everything to high with the same res/FSAA settings, and fuck, it looked awesome. That sort of came out of nowhere, I know, but it really looked like a whole new game. Medium settings look like Farcry, but high settings actually look next gen. Jesus, I've been missing out on a shitload.
Anyways, FPS: 30-40 during gunfights, 25 during the more intense moments. So yeah, this card on high settings runs the game a lot faster then my X1900 on medium. And if this CPU is holding me back as much as I think it is....

I'll run a few more games tomorrow.

It's pretty close to being as powerful as the GTX 280.  So perhaps an overclocked GTX 260.

Yeah, the 9700NT is hawt.  I wish I spent a little more for it rather than my 9500LED.

FUCKING YES
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

Reminds me of people who add ground effects to their Sunfires & Cavaliers. Just overall hideous...Your computer is meant to be a powerhouse, not look like Vegas at nighttime. Hell I barely look at the damn box, I just know I've built it to do what I need to do, and quickly.

The CPU isn't really bottlenecking as much as most of you think, it's just that the CPU score is factored into the overall 3dMark score, so that's why he's getting low scores.

And yes, a stock 6400 is probably bottlenecking a little bit too, but 3dMark is just an e-penis tool and doesn't reflect real performance.

Not anymore. I run at 3.73 right now, for temp- and voltage reasons. Somehow, my chip looses performance at over 1.5v. I do, however, get 1300 points flat on 3.4. Around 1400 for 3.73.

I'm not saying my CPU is omgpwn, I'm saying that his CPU is omgsux. Even with that low multi, he should hit at least 3GHz without hassle.

Answer: 2.13 GHz

@those who poured scorn on my claims that clock speed is more important than cpu generation: So, clock speed ain't a good measure of how fast a PC is and all Core2's are faster than older cpus?

Yes, I know that, thank you. What I'm saying is, that 1800 points is a horrible score, since his system is capable of so much more.

Also, wasn't it you who had issues with the clock speed/architecture thing?
