A lot of parents take it way too seriously.
Learning to win and lose is important, soccer sucks though.

Ok, has anyone ever played a friendly game of anything and tried to win?

By the sounds of the reaction so far, people assume that if there is no shiny cup and promise of winning the league at the end kids lose all interest in the game and don't care if they win or lose. Get a bunch of school kids togather, split them into two groups and set them a challenge or play sports together and they'll try to win. Kids play sports to play sports and will try to win if possible. The idea that removing the trophy at the end of the year will make the slightest difference to the attitudes of the kids is very misplaced. They are aware if they win or loose a friendly game. My memories of being in a school football league were entirely focused on playing each game as it came. I was aware that we were in a league, but had no interest or memory of how well we were doing.

Parents tring to instill the attitude of everyone's a looser unless they get the trophy is terrible for kids. It says you are a looser unless you come first and once instilled into children can have some ugly outcomes in later life. You'll always find someone better than you, hence you're a looser, even if you're, by any reasonable standard, a complete sucess.

Pure, if you work hard and win, you used to get ice cream and trophies.  Now everyone gets ice cream and trophies, win or lose.  Its sends the wrong message.

Hmm. They're saying it's to better develop the skills. I'd have to agree that this country lags well behind others when it comes to natural home grown talent. Perhaps this is a good thing.

I'm looking at this from the reasons they're giving, and it's true. If this is what is going to make this place better at football in the future, then go on with it.

Yes everyone gets ice cream and trophies, but still only one side wins and they know it and care (usually). I don't play BF2 for ice cream or a trophy, but I certainly try to win. People try to win regardless of the prize. If removing the prize can stop push parents from causing problem I'm all for it. I don't believe kids care much one way or another.

It's all about balance.

Kids do need to experience and learn about competition.

But, too much pressure from coaches and parents can be damaging.

Now, is this erring too much on the side of caution? Probably - the parents/coaches should be 'punished', not the kids.

It's nothing to do with the 'pressure' put on the poor young souls, it's more an initiative driven out by the English FA to ensure that the focus is on developing good and skilled players that will keep a foothold in the future of English football... rather than a rabble of kids being driven by 'soccer moms' to simply win a game at any cost.

Here is the thing, it is all about policial correctness and the hurt feelings that may be felt if there is a winner and a loser, instead of "everyone is a winner" bullshit. It is all part of the attempt to make as all equals so no one has any more than another. It is bullshit. It is about controlling our lives. SO much that the govt. is willing to take away all of our hurt.....Fuck that.

Why are we starting to be so soft on kids?  My god, we are raising myspace and WoW pussies.  No wonder kids shot up schools and stab people.
It's such shite.

I relished competition when i was younger, excelling in football and swimming. Without competition, there's no drive to improve.

I agree with this resolution.  Parents and coaches put too much pressure on kids, when football is supposed to be fun at that age.  I see it here, parents insulting their kids when they don't play a good match, just coz they want their kids to be football stars and save them for the rest of their lives.  It's not ok.

While I agree we are being a bunch of pussy's towards kids(I can think of a few times where I deserved to be beaten), coaches can be rather overbearing.

WOW, most of the Brits I have met are pussies enough without the extra coddeling they will get now.  Now they will have to think up a more pussy drink to have than tea, if that can be done.

for some kids the competition that early on causes them to burn out early and not enjoy the sport in high school, but those are only the kids who can't take the heat.

Not so much in the UK, hence the article.
Parents are instilling 'win at all costs never mind the rules' in their kids.
Kids need to learn to win and lose without extreme pressure from their parents.
There have been cases where the parents have beaten up the ref because little Jimmy got a 'bad decision'.

US -> Ice cream and trophies -> Everyone wins
UK -> No trophies for anyone -> Nobody wins or loses

Both are crap.
