hi guys ..

school are offering an XPS M1330 as part of this year's laptop scheme and I was wondering (as it comes with a 3 year warranty/insurance) if I was to open it up and switch a hard drive or memory or something along those lines, will the warranty be voided?

cheers.

Probably. Well, for the harddrive, anyway. Best check the Terms and Conditions of the warranty, tbh.....

Dunno for Dell but usually you musn't open or dismantle anything if you don't wont to void warranty.

you wont void the warranty.  my work has a contract with dell, and people always upgrade their ram and drives and their warranty still covers all the other parts.  the new stuff will not be covered by dell's warranty though, so make sure you get a warranty for the new stuff too.  don't listen to everyone who says it will be voided, i have never ever heard of dell refusing to honor a warranty.  just make sure you don't do anything to the system itself, like case modifications.

oh and word to the wise, add the "complete care" coverage to your system.  you can literally throw your laptop off your school, and run over it with a car and dell will replace it.

So as long as I keep the old HD/RAM I will be ok to get some new stuff and the warranty will still be ok?

Yes, and I'm sure they will ask you to plug in the old components, and to see if you get the same issue.

We have mostly Dells at our office, and whenever we have problems, Dell often offers to just send me the part.  Short of replacing the motherboard in a laptop, I have them send me the parts to install.

As for RAM and HDD, they are usually considered end user upgradeable parts.  The hard drive is mounted in a bay on the side of the laptop.  One screw and bay comes out.  A few screws to remove the old drive from the bay, then install the new one and insert the bay back in the unit.  The RAM is usually accessible through a bay door on the bottom.  So in both cases you need not open the actual laptop to replace/upgrade these items.

I'm almost certain that RAM won't be of any concern in voiding your warranty. As for the HD, some companies don't allow it to be user-upgraded (although you can always put the old one back in when sending it back for fixing or whatever), but I'm pretty sure that Dell allows it. The only two companies I've seen so far that void warranty for a hard drive if not done by the company itself is Apple (and their Macbook Pro) and Sony.

I believe you will get your warranty voided if you reapply thermal paste or replace your processor (although possible, extremely difficult) because you most likely have to take the whole thing apart. Memory and Hard Drive should be no real problem, although you may wish to check with Dell if you aren't completely sure.

Nah I won't be switching cpu - just ram/hd as far as components go.

^link for the laptop
just find your specific and check the warrenty out
just says about service and parts so if you change something it'll be that part's warranty not the dell's that covers it (from what i understood)
