President Nicolas Sarkozy vowed severe punishment on Monday after 17 people were wounded when a French soldier mistakenly opened fire with live ammunition during a display at an army base.

The 28-year-old sergeant fired his assault rifle into a crowd of hundreds of visitors watching a mock hostage rescue operation Sunday at the base near the southwestern city of Carcassonne. The 28-year-old sergeant fired his assault rifle into a crowd of hundreds of visitors watching a mock hostage rescue operation Sunday at the base near the southwestern city of Carcassonne. Montpellier prosecutor Brice Robin said police were examining video footage of the shooting taken by another soldier and which showed the sergeant reloading his weapon after firing 25 shots.

"He was carrying several magazines and the tragedy is that he picked one that was in his pocket and which unfortunately carried live ammo," Robin told a news conference. He said that the ammunition was kept from a military operation that the suspect had taken part in earlier this month and "should not have been left there. That is why he is being held."Fifteen bystanders including five children were shot during the display as were two soldiers. A witness , who asked not to be named, told AFP he saw seven or eight soldiers with guns taking part in the simulation, one of whom was posing as a terrorist in the middle of the spectators."Suddenly, people were falling, we thought it was part of the exercise, and then we saw blood," he said.

Immediately after the real shots were fired, "an official shouted out over the loudspeakers 'Cease fire!'," he said. The three-year-old boy was operated on overnight and was in a stable condition, hospital officials said, adding that two of the victims were in a "serious" condition but all were stable.

Can't be accidental...

How can trained soldiers not know what type of ammo is inside their weapons, blank rounds look totally different to live rounds. Also, don't certain weapons need adaptors when firing blank rounds? (big things at the front of the barrel, used so that the gas is strong enough to cycle another round)

This is epic failure on behalf of a large portion of the chain of command...and the individual himself

Reloaded
Fired Real Shots (Accidental)

I can't understand how someone could be this stupid. You clearly wouldn't keep an mag of live ammo in with blanks. Especially if you know you will be needing to reload.

But seriously... blanks or not...How bout we DON'T fire at the visitors?
Isn't there some bit about always pretending the rifle is loaded and ready? Pointing your gun at people and pulling the trigger is maybe just not a good idea.

Still, 17 people no less. I'm assuming he missed somewhere in there, too. I wonder though, how why he was pointing it at the spectators anyway. There's always that #1 rule in the big book of firearms about treating every gun as if it were loaded with lethal rounds.

ok, so he shoots live ammo at the crowd, nearly killing ta least one person, and he's only being held for keeping live ammo after a military operation? and you;ll excuse me for saying. buyt thta soldier was dumb on a few levels. i was taught how to handle airguns by my father, and i imagine the same safety rules apply wiht real guns.

1) don't point the gun at anything you aren't willing to kill ( breached, he pointed the gun at the crowd)
2) always assume the gun is loaded ( not technically breached, he just wasn't aware that it was live rounds)
3) NEVER walk ahead of the guns until everyone has discharged their gun.

and I suppose for a gun that can take proper bullets, not pellets:
4) know what type of ammo you have in the gun.

so all in all, i thiink that soldier should be up on negiligence if not reckless endangerment.

The article says they were staging a "mock hostage rescue operation"

but yeah... still... What the fuck are you doing pointing a gun at a crowd and pulling the trigger if you don't want people dead.

HE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POINTING AND FIRING A GUN AT THINGS HE DID NOT WANT DEAD.

Plus he has shitty pretend aim.

thats really bad if thats the way to try to take out single enemies in a crowd full of non combatants.
