$90 and $30

As of tomorrow, Nvidia plans drop the prices of Geforce GTX 280 and 260. The reason for this sudden price cut is that the cards are not selling as well as Nvidia expected. The second part of the story is that Radeon HD 4870 ended up better than Nvidia had hoped.

Nvidia will cut $90 of the Geforce GTX 280 price-tag, but this is Nvidia's price to partners and we are not sure just how much will this affect the suggested etail price. We are sure that end user prices will also drop but probably a bit less than $90.

The Geforce GTX 260 will be $30 cheaper to partners and Nvidia will only offer limited price protection which means that some partners / distributors and stores might end up with some overpriced cards at their warehouses.

Many people won’t be happy but as of tomorrow GTX 280 and GTX 260 should be cheaper.
In my opinion thats just not enough, I understand the productions costs are high but majority of people will still prefer the half cheaper 4870 and 4850.

$30? lol, not that much of a "price drop" - they have done exactly what I said they would

they'll do minimal price drops but people will still wait and it will put a dent in ATi's market.

Wow, ATI really has nVidia by the balls this round. Not gonna lie, but I'm impressed by how ATI really put the pressure on nVidia for this series of cards. I wouldn't be surprised if nVidia does the same thing to ATI the next series of cards though; things tend to go in a cyclical manner.

Whenever I see a number like -$30, I think of mail-in rebates that you can never get sent out on time.

Itchy buying finger myself, I have been so close like three times today , But I am going to stick to my guns and wait out that 4870X2, if that thing beats the 280 even half as much as its being portraid to do its going to be a hell of a card.

Remember also this talk of a 4850X2 possibly joining it to help ATi hit Nvidia even harder.

What happened to nvidia winning the price to performance battle?

If they really want to compete with that 4870 they need to drop the 260 to $280 and the 280 to $400.

Otherwise, ATi has won this bout.

you can thank AMD for that since AMD owns (bought out) ATI  so see AMD is not all that bad

I think the guy from BFG meant in the grander scheme of things (or he was simply trying to keep his job).  I think this hash of cards is pretty much game set (perhaps not match) to ATi.  Nvidia are plauged by 65nm and horrible yields, even if they got onto 55nm, that wont on it's own solve the problem, there still not out in front in performance to justify the cost.  Especially with that 4870X2 looking for blood.  The 1GB version of the 4870 could end up trumping the 280 as 10% on average is within an overclocking margin.

4850X2 is a card to watch if the 3rd parties ever actually make it, that will be match point if we go with that tennis analogy .

Prices have already dropped on newegg. There are GTX 260s for $299 and 280s for $499. LMAO at the poor souls that paid $650 for the 280. If you did SLI you just lost $300.

*Correction - some 280s are $459-$469 after mail-in rebate.

There are threads on EVGA of people outraged over this. This is why you never buy this stuff the first weeks it's out. Cutting edge indeed, cutting up ur moneyz.

If you purchased one of these cards from newegg, you may be able to get them to reimburse the difference back to your cards.
