Seriously, what makes us so competetive? What makes us feel so strong about our point of view we become violent? Religion, sports, politics, career, material things, women, land, etc. I was at the sports bar tonight with some friends watching the Sox and the Yanks, which by the way you really have to live in CT to get the full understanding of that rivalry, and 3 separate fights broke out. Now, where I live its a pretty big deal but on the scale of things its only a game. I love competition, I'm a man's man so I will bet on just about anything but I never get to the point where I throttle someone over losing.

What are some of the big rivalry's where you live and how far back do they go? What started them?

For me here in CT it is Yankees (Italians) and the Red sox (Irish). You had best be one or the other.

You should see the Rangers vs. Islanders rivalry...it's INCREDIBLE how much hate sears from Rangers fans. It's almost funny. In school, Rangers fans get SO pissed off when they even notice an Islander fan. It's great. So this year (and last) the Islanders beat the Rangers in the season series, so after each win I'd wear my jersey. The reactions were priceless. What's even better is, I'll wear my jersey no matter how bad or good we're doing, yet you'll only see the Rangers fans whip out their jerseys after they're on some massive winning streak -cough fair weather fans-.

The funniest thing was, when the Penguins eliminated the Rangers in 5 games, I realized my brother had a Sidney Crosby penguins jersey so I wore that to school...the comments I got were HILARIOUS. "Take that off" or "Penguins suck faggot" or "RANGERS ROOL!@!1!!!". Asshats.

Eckhart Tolle's book A New Earth (eastern philosophy for a western audience) goes a long way towards explaining why react with such hostility to things that challenge our opinions. Basically it says that because we identify ourselves with our beliefs, opinions, and possessions, we feel personally threatened by attacks on those things. The ego, as Tolle calls it, seeks to preserve itself by preserving the things that it identifies and as a result, rivalries are formed.

Not a very good explanation, but you might get the idea. I would recommend reading the book anyway.
