WASHINGTON —  An influential Republican senator suggested Thursday that Congress might want to consider reimposing a national speed limit to save gasoline and possibly ease fuel prices.

" Sen. John Warner, R-Va., asked Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman to look into what speed limit would provide optimum gasoline efficiency given current technology. He said he wants to know if the administration might support efforts in Congress to require a lower speed limit.

Congress in 1974 set a national 55 mph speed limit because of energy shortages caused by the Arab oil embargo. The speed limit was repealed in 1995 when crude oil dipped to $17 a barrel and gasoline cost $1.10 a gallon.

As motorists headed on trips for this Fourth of July weekend, gasoline averaged $4.10 a gallon nationwide with oil hovering around $145 a barrel.

Warner cited studies that showed the 55 mph speed limit saved 167,000 barrels of oil a day, or 2 percent of the country's highway fuel consumption, while avoiding up to 4,000 traffic deaths a year.

"Given the significant increase in the number of vehicles on America's highway system from 1974 to 2008, one could assume that the amount of fuel that could be conserved today is far greater," Warner wrote Bodman.

Warner asked the department to determine at what speeds vehicles would be most fuel efficient, how much fuel savings would be achieved, and whether it would be reasonable to assume there would be a reduction in prices at the pump if the speed limit were lowered.

Energy Department spokeswoman Angela Hill said the department will review Warner's letter but added, "If Congress is serious about addressing gasoline prices, they must take action on expanding domestic oil and natural gas production."

The department's Web site says that fuel efficiency decreases rapidly when traveling faster than 60 mph. Every additional 5 mph over that threshold is estimated to cost motorists "essentially an additional 30 cents per gallon in fuel costs," Warner said in his letter, citing the DOE data. "

I cried.

Maybe it's just me but whenever I'm on the highway it doesn't seem like we go over 65 very often.

Wait wait. America's highways don't have a speed limit?

Why am I only learning this now.

I think they do, but it varies. And no one follows them unless there's traffic or there are cops around. But even then, the cops speed with everyone else too sometimes.

But yeah, around here limit is usually 65 mph, I think I've seen a 70 once. But if there aren't any cars around... I usually go a bit (understatement) over.

They do, but the limits vary between states and highways. Some highways here seem to be 55mph, some seem to be 65mph. I think a few states have it at 75MPH.

edit: lol Smithereener, one time I was driving up to New York with the family. My mom is a speed demon, so at one point we were doing like 105MPH (okay it's not lightning fast but it's well above the limit). We shot right past a state trooper, but luckily he was already pulling somebody else over

I don't think it is gonna happen ... if we were serious about saving energy, there are several major changes that could be made to the new car fleet that would save much more than by adjusting the speed limits.

On I495 the speed limit is 65 and i rarely see people doing less than 75.  On Rt. 3 he speed limit is 55 and i rarely see people doing less than 75.  I don't disagree with the speed limit, just not many people are going to obey it.

Ha! As I was driving to SD about a week ago, my sister pointed out that a cop was behind me. I was going about 85 in a 65 freeway (very few cars), so I was thinking I'd be in deep shit. So I slow down back to the speed limit, then I guess the cop got annoyed that I slowed down, changed lanes and passed me. I was . Then I sped back up lol.

Aye. I don't see how it'd be any different from now unless they crank up enforcement which would cost even more money. Money better spent on weaning us off the big fat titties of oil.

thats dumb, different cars will be more efficient at different speeds and in different gears,
why not make it standard for all cars to come with 6 or 7 or 8 speed geaarboxes, that would save a bit of fuel

not really more enforcement but the pd needs to do more of there job, cops for the most part hate working conjestied areas bc of risks of accidents and paperwork

yep cops actually hate issuing tickets bc they have to do paperwork

I can't believe I actually found somebody else who knows that. I have a 95 Chevrolet Caprice 5.7L 9c1 package. It used to be a highway patrol cop car so it's designed for speeding. I get better gas mileage averaging 75-80 than 55-60 like everybody says is the optimum speed. I hate when people call me stupid for believing that when I've actually experimented with different speeds and 75-80 is the best for my car. This National Speed limit is a joke.

In CA its 65 on freeways such as the 5 or the 405 but everyone drives 80+

135 past a chp pulling some guy over, we were going so fast he didnt even bother

People fly in big cities.  Every bypass route (ex. 295 as opposed to 95)  the limit is slower yet people drive faster.  A lot of southern states have their limit at 70.  More often than not, people drive as fast as the people around them.  I love how we were taught to do that in Driver's Ed, yet it never works when you tell a cop that.

On topic, I can see pros and cons to it.  Although with a national limit of 55, I can see myself flying to Florida a lot more than I drive it.

It sounds like a plan to get more money

A lower speed limit will save more lives, which means more people will still be alive to buy gas at the same price.

Whoever thinks 55 mph is a good idea is a rich asshole that has never been on a road trip. You can't get anywhere at 55.

Yes. One could also assume that the the larger conservation would remain equally relative to the larger consumption. What's with empty statements like these?

55 = lol

Motorway speeds here are 70 and at that it seems very slow. On a decent afternoon the motorway traffic will be doing 85 in the fast lane, which seems just about like you are getting somewhere. 55? It'd take me over 2 hours just to get to Dublin!

Indeed. If i was to follow the national speed limit it would take me 5 hours 18 mins to get from my house to the hotel in aberdeen but doing 120MPH i can get there in a little over 3 hours with 1 stop for food/toilet. People drive at the speed they want. Its only the dangerous people that get caught.

DSG ftw. The problem is that some cars are most efficient at 40mph

Most cars are working harder at 55 than 60, thats part of the reason they raised it
