Where they fail is that they're kind of difficult to follow for people who haven't read the books. I hadn't even touched one until I saw the first film, and was easily able to page through it knowing what was going on from having seen the movie. I think the first two films got it right. They were a little slow, but extremely detailed. Much of that was lost in the following movies, and it's sort of been downhill after #3.
It got to the point where things shown or things talked about are sometimes never explained or brought up ever again. Key points in the books are dropped in favor of creative writing; adding completely new elements that tie nothing together. The audience just had to shrug their shoulders and muscle through. Thanks to this, production has to play catchup by splitting the last movie into two parts (lame)...and book 7 wasn't even the longest.
