The Captains

Weird documentary by William Shatner is weird. Basically all the captain actors patting themselves and each other on the back at what a good job they've done. Some funny stuff, but just really weird. Maybe I need to be more of a Trekkie to get it.

Good watch, perhaps not worth watching if you don't like/understand poker.

Very well done, on a par with lock stock and snatch, one of the very best british/gangster films. The last 10 minutes really make this.

It feels wierd to watch the trailers in english when they've been speaking danish in the comics through one's entire childhood

"Snowy" for instance, is named "Terry" in the danish comic book...

I realize of course that the original language is dutch/french/german (lol Belgium speaks 3 languages???)...

Anyone have a good, easy movie to recommend? I don't have the energy to get too emotionally involved in anything, so some nice mindless comedy and/or action would be nice, but nothing crap ie. nothing with Adam Sandler or similar useless people.

Gangs Of New York - 6.5/10

DDL was great, Dicaprio pretty good. It seemed a tad confused to me, lacked focus, pretty poorly written. I didn't really "believe" what I was watching, the first half had my attention, then it seemed to drag on forever with very little substance. My least favourite Scorsese film for sure.

you give 'horrible bosses' a 7 and gangs of new york a 6.5?

why apply such specific numerical ratings if they're entirely meaningless. stick to a personal consistent scale or don't use ratings at all.

I would say his scale is obviously pretty "personal"...

"consistent" is the second part of that. he has no consistency at all. he tries to come across as critical and appreciative of film and then just elevates shit films to higher ratings than good films at his personal whim. what's the point?

Those silly Belgians

I never read Tintin as a young'un, i was aware of it but had no actual interest. However, the film was great, and perhaps if i had read the Original Herge's, my opinion might have been something quite different.

BTW, The Life Aquatic starts BBC One in about 40 mins

4 stories woven into one, all connected... and showing how communication is so necessary, and yet sometimes so impossible in this world. Enjoyed it a lot.

It's a fair point, my ratings probably don't make much sense from a purely critical point of view.

Gangs Of New York was hugely disappointing, I had big expectations. 7, was what Horrible Bosses maximum score would have been before I even watched it, given it's context there's really no way it can achieve any higher that that, but it delivered well, it did what it was set out to do, so it achieved it's maximum rating. Gangs Of New York, with it's cast, director and budget was capable of being a 9 or 10, it was a massive let down, it didn't even come close to fulfilling its potential, 7 would have been "pretty good," but I thought it even fell short of that. Which did I enjoy more? Horrible Bosses, and many people think Gangs Of New York was a flop (despite it's fairly high IMDB rating), if you take Daniel Day Lewis out of that film, it turns into a pretty shit film then, the acting throughout is awful, as is the plot construction (IMO). so in that regard I feel my scale is accurate if you are comparing those 2 films. I wouldn't watch a film that I would expect to be a 5, that's why I rarely have low ratings.

Anyway, I don't consider myself to be a film boffin Uzique, you need not worry. If I did, BF2s would be the last place I would post any sort of review, I just come in here straight after I've finished watching and put a rating and some comments, based on my "personal" scale, is it consistent or not? That's a matter of opinion really.

Akira 10/10

The only Anime movie I could ever stand to watch. Coincidentally it's also one of the most highly rated by English audiences. The most highly rated is of course Spirited away which I'm going to watch this weekend. I haven't seen it since I was a child and barely remember it.

I know just saying "anime" puts a mental image in most people's heads of tentacle rape and Dragon Ball Z but Akira is great movie that doesn't fall into the other anime traps. If you want to see a very mature, very well written movie and can put up with it being animated watch Akira.
