Super 8 - 6/10.
They did a decent job capturing the nostalgia of old adventure movies like Goonies, but there were too many plot holes for me to really get into it. (...isn't that THE biggest complaint against J.J. Abrams' work?)

Captain America - also about a 6/10.
I liked the buildup of the first half of the movie, but the 2nd half (which should have been the better half, with all the superhero-ey action and whatnot) fell flat on its face. I realize it's a comic book movie, but there was just too much cheesiness for my taste.

Just watched Mr. Nobody. Directors cut is 2 hrs 30, and worth every second. Love this movie, seen it about 5 times now. Just brilliant.

Ok, seriously, if anyone can recommend any good slightly older (like a year old or more) family movies, I would appreciate it. We got a super cheap "Family Movie Pass" at our local Blockbuster, and have been going through some the selection. The successes have been outweighed by some pretty crappy things. Here are some examples from the last few weeks:

Race to Witch Mountain: We really enjoyed it.
Bridge to Terabithia: Loved it.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: Really Enjoyed it.
Alice in Wonderland: Loved it.

Gnomeo & Juliet: Shoot me in the face.
The Nutty Professor (Original): A good example of a romanticized movie I loved as a kid, but really sucks.
The Spiderwick Chronicles: I don't care how much they advertise this as an "Adventure" for "families" it was pretty much a crappy horror flick for kids.
The Smurfs (not an older one on our pass, but still): Wake me when it gets interesting.
Flubber: So cheesy... The original was so much better...

Jack and the Beanstalk (2010): Ummm... Wow
The Cast:
Christopher Lloyd
James Earl Jones
Chevy Chase
Katey Segal
Chloe Grace Moretz (Girl from Kick-Ass)
Wallace Shawn (Vizzini from Princess Bride)
Gilbert Gottfried

Ok, the Gilbert Gottfried part had me nervous, but the cast looked like it would be pretty good...

This is like a CRAPPY Saturday morning cartoon come to life. This is so awful... It is set in the typical Jack in the Beanstalk time, but they have things in it like the C.O.W. (Computer of Wonder Video Game System) he trades for the magic beans. And daydreams about voice recognition systems that shoot lasers. Not to mention pillow-fighting ninjas. The only redeeming values:
Spoiler (highlight to read):

I am putting this in spoiler tags which is hilarious to me, cause none of you will ever see this movie.
Wallace Shawn tries to trade Jack some Iocaine powder, but then remembers it is quite poisonous.
Christopher Llloyd is a teacher and is seen teaching his kids about flux capacitors.
Gilbert Gottfried is a goose that makes some very Aflac duck noises at the beginning of the movie (before he gets turned into a goose-man)

So if anyone has some good recommendations, I will take them!!!

Skyline.

So bad.

Maybe I'd feel better about it if I gave up early and didn't see the half-arsed, ridiculous, stupid, pointless ending. How can a film that looked so cool in the trailers turn out so utterly awful? All build up with little pay-off and a conclusion that hopefully hopefully isn't an attempt to start a franchise. Detestable one-dimensional characters, (who you can't bring yourself to give even the smallest fuck about,) a poor attempt at narrative, cliche and ultimately incredibly unsatisfying.

Also Crysis called, they want their intellectual property back.

Mission Impossible: 9/10. For what it was, it was pretty entertaining with good funny bits. The most obnoxiously fake thing about it though is that a guy plugged in a usb stick on the first try. Total. Fucking. Bullshit.

Me and my friends watched it. We were all like "Hey maybe it won't suck, we'll just watch like 10 minutes and if it sucks we'll stop."

But we didn't stop. I don't know why, we should have, we really should have. But we didn't. Fucking shit was the worst movie any of us have seen.

Yeah Turk. The only likable character due to the fact that it's Turk. But of course he's black so he doesn't last long.

That's the weird thing isn't it? You can watch it quite easily up until a point. It's enjoyable albeit predictable sponge cake, you can get over that the characters are really poorly defined and unlikable and the plot is cliche. When the aliens "win" you think that it's kind of a cop-out ending because tey couldn't be arsed drawing anything to an explainable conclusion - but you admire the film maker's balls to just end an alien invasion movie on "everyone's fucked".

And then;

So it's not over and we have to know what happens the the forgettable chick and bland dude. The payoff is that we see the bland dude get his head vaporised but unfortunately have to witness the stupid body-switcheroo thing. And then it's one alien-man vs a ship full of aliens protecting his stupid pregnant girlfriend aand-

Nothing. Just nothing. Cut to stupid metal soundtrack and freeze-frames. That's it. Why? The "This is never explained" list is a mile long, they didn't even attempt to explain anything, and this final kick to the crotch is just... pointless. After you've seen the ending everything about the film just crashes down around it. This is not how you make a film and this is not how you construct a narrative.

You can't help but feel that whoever produced this movie wanted it to fail and hurt itself on the way down. Given that Brett Ratner was the executive producer I wouldn't be surprised if this is exactly what happened.

No doubt, they only had $10m. But it sucked so much worse than just budget issues, it wasn't built like a Chinese apartment block it was built like a Soviet Frank Gehry concert hall. The special effects were decent, the actors weren't even that bad, it's just that they had nothing to work with in a story that meandered around before tripping on an errant shoelace and spinning face-first into a wall.

I'm dwelling on this I know but it was really just so bad. It seems anyone else could have pulled a better alien movie out of their arse - but I suppose this had to be Brett fucking Ratner.

Here are some examples from the last few weeks:
Here's about as exhaustive of a list as I can come up with this morning:

- Daffy Duck's Quackbusters (always a classic)
- any collection of Batman: The Animated Series, Pinky & the Brain, Animaniacs! or Freakazoid!; don't underestimate the 90's toons
- for that matter, a lot of the Batman animated feature films have gotten good ratings. Mask of the Phantasm, I think one of them was
- some mouse flicks: Ratatouille, the Secret of NIMH, one of the Rescuers or the Tale of Despereaux, Stuart Little, American Tale
- Iron Giant
- the animated Lord of the Rings movies, depending on how much weird shit you want to watch
- Bedknobs & Broomsticks, Marry Poppins, Nanny McPhee
- things like Milo & Otis, Babe, The Cat from Outer Space, and Black Stallion
- any number of CGI films (plenty of good ones to choose from) or Disney Classics (cartoon or otherwise); ones that immediately spring to mind are Monsters Inc., Up, Despicable Me, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and Monsters vs Aliens
- Discworld adaptations like The Hogfather, Going Postal, or the harder-to-find animated Wyrd Sisters or Soul Music (Christopher Lee plays Death)
- the original Willy Wonka film with Gene Wilder, plus Young Frankenstein
- The Mask, Ghostbusters
- Honey, I shrunk the Kids, Pure Luck
- Pan's Labrynth, Beetlejuice
- the Witches, Hocus Pocus or Ernest Scared Stupid/Saves Christmas/Goes to Jail
- Labyrinth, Time Bandits, Princess Bride, Goonies, Back to the Future, Legend, Pagemaster
- The Last Unicorn, if you're feeling adventurous
- Home Alone (if you haven't seen it a thousand times), the Santa Clause (and 2/3 if you can stomach more)
- Christmas Vacation, Coneheads
- stop-motion flicks like Coraline, the Fantastic Mr. Fox, or Wallace & Grommit (particularly Curse of the Were-Rabbit)
- a lot of the Peter Pan movies, especially Hook
- mild Japanese stuff like Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away
- the Addams Family films
- I liked "the Red Balloon" when I was a kid
- the new "Chronicles of Narnia" films are relatively bloodless
- Fantasia/F2000, if you know what scenes you want to skip
- The Rock's Tooth Fairy isn't nearly as bad as the concept makes it sound. good supporting cast. might as well add Tim Allen's Shaggy Dog at this point

Most of these you should be able to find at a rental shop. Things like Discworld (aside from Hogfather), probably not.

e: adding Short Circuit and Wall E before I sign off for a bit

Thanks for the input!

My responses:

We have gone through:
- Daffy Duck's Quackbusters
- Batman: The Animated Series (and movies - Currently halfway through Superman, then will be hitting Justice League, Batman Beyond, etc)
- Ratatouille, Secret of NIHM, Tale of Despereaux, American Tale
- Iron Giant
- Mary Poppins
- Black Stallion
- Babe
- All the Disney and Pixar and Dreamworks CGI movies
- Willy Wonka and Young Frankenstein
- A couple Ernest movies
- Princess Bride, Back to the Future, Pagemaster
- The Home Alones and Santa Clauses
- The Narnias
-Short Circuit and Wall-E

Already on our To Watch List:
- Animaniacs (With Pinky and the Brain)
- Bedknobs & Broomsticks (I keep forgetting this one though)

Never thought about/heard of, but will add/look into now:
- Freakazoid!
- Stuart Little
- Nanny Mcphee (Looked like it would be particularly annoying, but can give it a try)
- Milo & Otis
- The Cat from Outer Space
- Discworld? - Hogfather, Going Postal, Wyrd Sisters, Soul Music
- The Mask
- Honey I Shrunk the Kid (Hated Blew up the kid and the series, so I forget about the original movie)
- Pure Luck
- Labyrinth
- Time Bandits
- Legend
- The Last Unicorn
- Coneheads
- Coraline
- the Fantastic Mr. Fox
- Wallace & Grommit
- Hook (Don't think we have watched it with the younger 2)
- Addams Family
- Red Balloon
- Shaggy Dog
- Tooth Fairy (We might have already watched)

Ruled Out for one reason or another:
- the animated Lord of the Rings movies
- Pan's Labyrinth
- Princess Mononoke
- Spirited Away
- Fantasia

Holding off until the youngest is a little older (He is only 3):
- Ghostbusters
- Beetlejuice
- Hocus Pocus
- The Witches
- Goonies
- Christmas Vacation (I love it, it would bore the kids though I think...)

Thank you, you have given me a lot of ideas and things to look for... I doubt the local store has many of these, but there is always Netflix.

Also consider "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?"

Newbie um... Pan's Labrynth? Really? You seriously think a movie where a dude gets his face brutally and graphically bashed in by a wine bottle is a family movie? A movie where a dude get's a Glasgow Smile ripped into his face? A movie with torture and murder? The Pale Man? You must have had a traumatic childhood.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit is a good one though.
