I'm applying for a job at Best Buy and erm, I'm stuck on this question. As much as I'd like to earn $100 an hour I know that's not gonna fly... but I'm scared that if I put minimum wage then they'll just keep it at that.

This is for a floor sales rep for the gaming/software department. Should I put minimum wage? A bit above?

Ahh, very good question man.

I usually don't know what to put. Just leave it blank, or say 'Negotiable'

I don't think there's a way to leave it blank or put negotiable... it's an online application...

If you have any sort of job experience, you can try to ask for a bit more than minimum wage. If you don't have any, you're best off just writing minimum wage, or maybe like 50 cents more.

oh

Sorry n00bkilla, thought you were trying to insult me no hard feelings?

FatherTed, pretty sure it's commissioned because they also had a 'Non-Commissioned Sales' job option.

That site suggests that around $9.30 is the average wage. DC minimum wage is gonna be $7.55 in about two week's time. Maybe I should put something in the middle (e.g. $8.50)?

@Heggs no paid job experience but this is my 2nd summer volunteering at this program (it's only a couple hours in the morning so it doesn't interfere)

You aren't going to get the job.

I've applied for 7 jobs this summer, including one at BestBuy and none of them were hiring.

First job through a major chain?  You will get "scale" which is just their formula ... you shouldn't expect too much more than minimum wage (in a few weeks it will be $6.55).

I work a lot with entry-level people and it is rare around Northern Virginia for jobs to pay less than $8 an hour.  In fact, I can't remember the last time I saw pay lower than that.  Typically, it is in the $8 to $11 range.  For example, I knew I guy who spoke little English, and he started at Dick's Sporting Goods in Chantilly as a stockman for $10 an hour.  He was a very hard worker.

Yup, probably so.

Years ago I applied with little or no job experience, they basically laughed at me right there.

I wouldn't expect much if I were you Hurricane, there's a good chance you won't get it.

If it is commissioned pay, then your question is pretty much moot (unless the commissions are token gestures).

$11.55  ??

Employers won't hire him if his demands are that high ... typically the reason this question is asked is simply to see if the person puts in too high of a pay requirement.  If too high, then they reject him.  If too low, then (if hired), he'll be paid according to their pay scale.

never go too low and never go way over what to expect, I would put down about $8.

If you go low they will just think you have no backbone. If too high they will think your a joker.

You have to be seen to value your worth.

I think I'm gonna go for $8.00. Worst comes to worst, I get paid 45 cents less than that in about two weeks

And yes I know jobs are hard to get this summer for some reason but I'm applying anyway. Better to apply and possibly get in than to not apply and have no chance of getting in.
