  • I can't install Windows Live messenger or several microsoft updates

I recently reinstalled XP Pro SP2, patched it to SP3 and then I can't install any updates through Microsoft Update or even install Windows Live messenger, which I'm guessing is for the same reason.

Does anyone know why this happens?

My friend wants to talk to me and it's fucking infuriating to see the piece of shit cancel the installation 2 seconds in every time I try it.

Did you do a repair install? That breaks WU now

This guy may help.

No, I cloned the hard drive at first using Western Digital Lifeguard tools, and then it didn't boot completely so I just erased the partition and installed Windows completely from scratch.

what I would do is:
1) go to: start->run->services.msc (press OK)
2) Right Click "Automatic Updates Service" and select STOP

3) Go to: start->run->%windir% (press OK) this opens up your windows directory, probably C:\Windows

4) search for the map SoftwareDistribution. Change this to SoftwareDistributionOld or something else.
5) Back at services.msc, right click Automatic Updates Service and select Start

(note that starting up the service can take a little while).

Then run automatic updates again.

if you go to the windows update site, and try to run the update from there, it should generate an error in the upper right corner when it fails.  (it will be something like 0x000343AD)  you can search for the error code on their support site and it should give you some more help.

Try this.

1. Open a command prompt.
2. Type NET STOP WUAUSERV and press Enter. Wait for the notice that service stopped.
3. Type REGSVR32 %WINDIR%\SYSTEM32\WUPS2.DLL and wait for the message that the dll was registered.
4. Type NET START WUAUSERV and press Enter.  Wait for the message that the service was started.
5. Try installing your updates.

Happy to help.  I ended up spending several hours researching this issue at work after having the same issues once SP3 was installed.

I've seen this problem before SP3 though.  Maybe it's just something they never corrected.

Oh, I have too, but none of the other fixes worked.  In fact, the first fix for this is supposed to be as simple as installing a new updater engine from MS, but that didn't work.  I've had to go this manual route.

My comment about SP3 was simply that something in SP3 caused this dll to become unregistered so updates wouldn't install.  I hope MS corrects this problem, as it would really wreak havoc on an average user with little computer knowledge.

Yeah, MS released it about a month ago.
