Schwarzenegger against banning smoking in films

Actor-turned-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger has spoken out against anti-smoking campaigners trying to rid Hollywood films of cigarettes and cigars. The California governor, a renowned cigar aficionado, insists children need to be warned of the dangers of tobacco but argues that filmmakers who wish to feature smoking should be able to exercise their artistic freedom, particularly in period settings, according to FoxNews.com.

"I personally don't believe that we should erase cigarettes in movies," he said. "I don't believe that we should erase when someone smokes a cigar in a movie. I think that we should remind people and kids all the time about the dangers of smoking. To all of a sudden tell actors not to smoke a cigarette in a movie when they portray a character ... is ludicrous. I think this is going too far."

I agree with him. Discuss.

I believe they pixelate out smoking in some Asian countries, I might be wrong.

It is ridiculous, I believe art forms like movies should be a mirror to society and as such there should be no censorship. Age restrictions certainly but not censorship.

No.  There's a ban for cigarettes ads in Europe f.i. when the F1 takes place in Europe, you'll see there's no cigarettes ads on the cars, ridiculous.  In fact, that's more publicity.

Yeah, why not? We should go ahead and ban the consumption of alcohol in movies as well. Along with clothing deemed 'too tight' by this "Board of Morals" that's trying to ban it. They should also outright ban movies that show any political or social opinions that differ from that of the Board.

Part of me wants to say "No" because Clint Eastwood as The Man with No Name in the Spaghetti Westerns wouldn't have been the same without the cigar.

And Part of me says "Yes" because then they wouldn't be able to do that overdone stunt where some douche-bag throws his lite cigarette into oil and blows up something.

I find it strange how they call for the banning of smoking, a cigarette in a war or action movie is the least thing they should worry about lol. *Cue giganitic explosion and gunfight.

Man I wish we had stuff like that in the U.K.
No absolutely not smoking is the coolest thing ever, Solid Snake smokes and he is cool as fuck. People can say all these things about it influencing children but fuck em let them buy their fake and chocolate cigarettes.

Obviously in children's films they pretty much don't have any smoking so if the child ends up smoking maybe he has been watching movies above his age limit. Even then he shouldn't be able to get hold on them, besides some film's wouldn't be cool without a machine welding cigar toking hero.

It's down to the parent to teach and show their children there are choices all these bullshit laws are going to get parents complacent. A generation of children raised by their televisions and xbox's.

probably never gonna happen. you can show jack bauer torturing people on TV but the moment janet jackson's tit appears for a few seconds, it's the absolute worst thing in the world.

edit: wah118 while a kid's movie shouldn't necessarily be glorifying smoking, shouldn't it be the parent's responsibility to tell their kids that smoking is incredibly damn bad for you?

Yeah don't get me wrong HurriJew it's just that in general it would just be inappropriate for lets say erm, Kung Fu Panda to lit up a ciggie mid-fight.

very true, but as evidenced most movie studios know it'd be really bad PR to have a cuddly CGI bear smoking marlboros

On a side note, I only recently learned (and thus realized) that you can't have ads for cigarettes on TV.

Why stop there? Ban swearing as well. JK!

I agree with him, let them smoke cancer sticks on screen if they wish. Enough people know already smoking is bad.

You're stretching too far. Smoking is odd that it is being targeted by what I assume to be health freaks that share some of the beliefs that your "Board of Morals" idea has. The people complaining are probably making the argument that smoking is a bad influence and shouldn't even be witnessed. Your Morality Board consists of those crazy uber-"family values" folks who are utterly against violence, sex, and everything else that is fun/entertaining.

I dislike the fact that smoking is currently the target of all this rage by interest groups and whatnot. Alcohol is a similar threat and how often do you hear about someone dying from secondhand smoke (if they're a waitress who works in a poorly ventilated room for years on end is one of the few ways I tihnk that it is possible). I'd prefer if alcohol were at least the target but thanks to "Big Alcohol" (if there is a "Big Tobacco," there must be one of these, too) those companies have the moolah to get prime commercial spots at the Super Bowl and no one complains. I don't need to list the ways it is detrimental here, and I'm certainly not condoning smoking, but like the singling-out of sex offenders, there should be equal treatment all around.

there is big tobacco. it's just as harmful as weed (inb4weedisfine, i'm not trying to start an argument about it), meth, PCP, crack, whatever yet it is still legal. I think more people have died from complications caused by smoking tobacco than from asbestos - yet tobacco is still alive and kicking.
