Does anyone here have one and if so, what model?
I've seen a few of the proposed specs of e-pc's that are expected to end up in australian schools. Latest aus government has come up with the idea that every child in primary and especially high school should have access to and\or own a computer.
They are cheap and ideal for students, there's even a suggestion these could be loaned as easily as library books.
At the moment though microsoft is trying to get together a cheap e-pc to combat an e-pc that is using an open source operating system because the idea of an e-pc is that it's cheap. Who's going to buy an e-pc that costs less than the operating system that's installed on it and makes you fork out more than you have to?
Anyway I digress. I don't have one.

The Dell E is out sometime soon and is worth a look. Also;

The one thing I love about the EEE, though, is the SSD.
I'm already pretty set on getting the 900, though. Just curious if others have them. I've been scouring the EEE User forums like crazy today.
BTW: That Wiki isn't very good ...

Something about the naming scheme and things like 'Dell E' make me want to throw up. And we thought the Wii was bad...

They're ok, but their screens are pure and utter shit. 800x480 - my 13" notebook from 1998 had a fucking 1024x768 display!
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
Freezer, I invite you to look at the 900 model. 1024x800 (IIRC) resolution with the new 8.9" screen. You're complaining about a 7" notebook having bad resolution compared to an old 13" notebook. Of course the larger screen will have a higher resolution. Don't be dumb, dude.
Not only that, but from the 900/901 you have the new 1000 models with even larger screens. Come on, man. You call yourself a nerd and you don't know this shit? I thought you were smart.

I'm comparing it to a 13" notebook - from a decade ago. That's the point I was trying to make. Their pixel density is far from what it could be. If they had the same pixel density as my half-assed phone, they'd have 1280x960px screens. I understand that the low-end models don't ship with better screens - that'd put the price at a whole other level, but the more expensive models should have better screens.CapnNismo wrote:

Nothing to facedesk about, you missed my point.

Reread that first sentence in the quote again and you will see the reason that the 8.9" doesn't have an even better screen. Once again - STOP BEING DUMB!Freezer7Pro wrote:

The 900 is only like $100/€100 more than the 701 models, and the 901 ~$60 more than the 900 (and all you get is Wifi N, Bluetooth and a slightly different touchpad, and a gayer chassis housing). The whole idea with these things is keeping the price down, dude.
If you want a better screen, go buy the 11" Sony for €2000, or one of the other more higher-end Netbooks like the Acer One, the Dell E, etc. STOP BEING DUMB!

Yes, they're made to be cheap, but those low res' are below everything. 1024x800, what is that? Some 5:4 format of 1024? If you mean 1280x800, that's actually a really decent res, especially for the size.CapnNismo wrote:

As for the comparasion to a 13" notebook, I must repeat that it is from ten years ago. Have you got any idea of how far LCD technology has evolved during the last ten years? Pixel density today is way beyond anything they could have even dreamt about back then. Screen size/res is not linear. Different screens have different pixel densities. My cellphone packs 320x240px on 2". That's 1280x960 on 8". Asking that kind of density out of a starter-level notebook is too much, that I realize, hence "that would put the price on a whole other level", but 800x480 (talking about the lower-end) is a tad on the lower side, even for the price.

The lower ends were so cheap as to be bought at $250 ... at that point, I am not expecting much from a machine. From there, the hardware upgrades are with memory and the HDD and whether or not you want a camera. The screen at 7" is the LEAST of my worries ...
I have the
EEEPC 8.9\" 20GB 1GB Wifi Linux Black
Reformatted and Windows XP pro put on..... with an Uprated battery
excellent little Gadget for surfing away from home/work etc but not too good as a Laptop/Desktop replacement...the keyboard is too small to comfortable type on long term....

I'm only getting mine for portable computing. Take a few notes on in class, or even record entire class sessions (my German class, for starters). Then I can download a language book and stop carrying an actual book with me to use to translate in class.
Would be perfect for that!!CapnNismo wrote:

Exactly!
Problem is, all of this is hinging on a job interview on Saturday morning. If I get the job, I can get the computer at the end of September. If I don't get the job ... well ... you can figure it out.
